Can anyone reccomend an entry level DSLR for me?
show user profile  Sylverstalker
I've interested in photography for a couple of years now and I've been reading some of the theory so I am seriously considering buying my first camera. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good entry level DSLR?

I bought one last week too mate. Exciting times. :)

I got a very cheap one, its a Sony A230L. Seems to get really good reviews for the price. I might post a photo thread when i take anything worth sharing. make sure you do the same!

I own a Nikon D3000 which isn't badly priced and have got some decent photos from it! Lots of tutorials on the web for it too!

It might be a good idea to wait a little while, a bunch of new cameras have been announced and the older models might come down in price some more.

I myself have a Canon EOS 40D and I think its great! Infact, all Canon DSLR's are great!!! *!!biased biased biased biased!!*
but I'm probably biased towards Canon xD

Nikon have some tempting cameras out there since they started using CMOS in their DSLR's.
The only problem I see with nikon is the lens prices, cheap cameras but really expensive glass! (awesome sharp glass though.)

if you want to venture into the world of dslr photography it would be best not to go for the cheapest body. check out second hand bodies which might give you a little more feel of what dslr's can do.

and yes, it's not the body that will render you bankrupt its the glass

i recommend starting out with only 1 lens
a 50mm f1.8 ($100) or even a f1.4 ($350ish)
that lens propelled me into a new and exciting world :)
good luck shooters

Thanks guys :) I am pretty excited about getting into it. I'm a cautious buyer so i think i might wait a while and see if some of the prices go down. I was thinking that I'd need to spend a bit over $1000 (Australian Dollars) so the Nikon D3000 and the Sony A230L are cheaper than I though it they were going to be.

They couple of photographers that I know often have little disputes between Cannon and Nikon. Is there much difference between them for a newbie photographer?

One thing I've been told about is cameras that fake data to advertise higher Megapixel counts, is this an issue with Nikon or Canon?

@soontek: I am willing to spend a bit more money for something that will last me longer and I will consider the second hand market, I'm sure there will be people at my uni that are selling their cameras. Are there any risks or considerations i should think about when buying second hand?

@twitt: I'm new to all these photographic terms I think I was told that CMOS prone to noise by my design lecturer. Is this still a problem with the technology?

From reading reviews and looking at full res samples, the noise levels were always higher in the Nikon's with CCD chips vs the Canon's with CMOS chips, thats why I went with Canon (at that time).

Is your budget $1000? I'd recommend a Canon 50D, the price has dropped incredibly on that body, I owned one until it got stolen and it's an amazing camera, it is going for about 800 bucks new. you might find it used for less. just put a 50mm 1.8 on it as it as they mentioned (I have one myself) and shoot away..

"hey I want a car and my budget is 15.000 dollar"

And everyone starts to shout what worked great for him.

1: What's your experience with DSLR's?
2: Have any subject in specific in mind what you want to shoot?
3: How portable do you want to be?
4: What do you prefer, versatility or quality? (ignore spelling, I'm drunk)
5: Do you like abstract or journalism?
6: Do you own any lenses or do you have friends with camera's and lenses?

I mean what's wrong with spending 300 dollar on a 300D/350D (Canon) and a 18-200 lens?
With THAT camera you can make:
6.3-8 mp pictures.
Learn how to work with wide-angle up till zoom.
Learn what a DSLR is, it's strengths and it's weaknesses.
Save a LOT of money so when you DO know what you love, you can spend 700 dollar more while knowing a LOT about the subject.

It all depends on what you want to do with it before you can recommend ANYTHING.
I mean the 50 1.4 lens, I love it... but for some-one who is completely new, the 1.8 would perfectly do... we don't even know whether he hates portraits or not!

Do you like parties and night shots? Do you like sunny pictures? Do you like both? What preferences... tell us what you want to capture and learn, THEN we can seriously look into your case.

*off to bed, drunk and I have 80 km to bicycle tomorrow, THEN do a company-day-out-in-the wild, then get drunk, and bicycle another 170 km... so, bye*

albongino, thanks for your help :) it looks like a camera well suited to my budget but i will consider what stevegeK has to say.

StevegeK, I apologies if i have annoyed you with my nebulous question, I imagine it gets asked all the time.

1. I have next to no experience with DSLR's but I am really enthusiastic to learn.
2. I am interested in portrait photography and nature photography.
3. Portability isn't one of my major concerns
4. This one is harder...I suppose for now I want versatility
5. I really like abstract photography but I am studying journalism, so journalism.
6. I do have a couple friends with a couple of lenses each.

There is nothing wrong with buying a 300D/350D Canon and a 18-200 lens, i actually think that is a fairly reasonable idea.

I would wait another month at least before committing to anything. Photokina (the biggest photo expo in the world) is next month and a lot of new gear is going to be released.

Really you can't go wrong with anything you buy, but different cameras and brands do have different strengths and weaknesses. Canon and Nikon are the two big players, and a lot of people here have their cameras. For me, I was never really inspired looking at their camera and lens line ups.

My first camera was an Olympus E-300 about 6 years ago. I Have since bought a lot of lenses and an Olympus E-3 camera. And I have recently added a Sony A850 to the collection, and I got to admit I've been really impressed with the Sony camera.

Sony is a big one to watch, they are a very big company and very innovative, they also have a huge heritage in the form of Minolta that they bought out.

I would also be looking at the new mirror-less interchangeable lens format cameras or MILFs =P
They are pretty cool though still very new

I would very likely give my left leg for a good micro 4/3 camera with the new voigtlander 25mm f.095 if it is any good

Best of luck and it is good to see more people interested in photography
Check out my photo thread if you want to see shots from the sony / olympus cameras, I think I am the only person here shooting either of them

Best of luck

You might as well look into a DSLR that shoots good HD video like the Canon T2i (550D) or the new 60D.

Back, and sober lol.

Anyway:

1. Okay well photography is easy to learn. Good photo's are a different story but okay.

Anyway let's combine Q 2 and 5. You study journalism and you like portraits and nature. Well in that case the 18-200 lens is a serious contender. Esp. second hand it's not too expensive and the quality is fine for now. More than that. I played around with an 18-200 from Tamron and the quality surprised me.

The thing is with that lens, you can go from very wide to zoom and if you're doing journalism, you might get into situations where you don't have the time to swap lenses.

Next to that the 50 1.8 might be a VERY nice portrait lens. It's a seriously awesome lens made for portraits. It's also not expensive, second-hand you can get it from $50 - $100 if you try a little bit. SOMETIMES people with an old eos film camera sell their (or grandpa's) gear for like $20 and that lens might be included in the deal.. just a small hint.

So 18-200 *or something equivilent)* and the 50 1.8 *1.4 is nicer but you're on a budget..* qould be awesome for the lenses.

The bodyis different. I think you have about 600~700 bucks left for a body if 1000 is your budget and you bought those 2 lenses second-hand. The 550D is an awesome camera. Compact, quality and it films. It's really a good introduction on a VERY high level.

Verdict
Canon EOS 550D body only.
Tamron 18-200 lens (or Sigma's... or Canon's if you have some money left)
50 1.8 lens

That's what I should do if I were you. Quality, all-round and it covers quite a lot of aspects of photography.

Albongino: yeah might be a good idea.
