Really strange PC crash.
show user profile  LionDebt
So, I'll notice after a little while (a few hours; sometimes more, sometimes less) that it looks like my internet has died. Or more precisely, my browser stops loading pages - at least, this is where it is most noticeable. Opening task manager works maybe 50% of the time once I've hit this point. When I do get it up and running, I find a few apps have "become unresponsive", no shit. So I close them down. I eventually get to the point where I end up closing all open programs and even Windows Explorer has... "become unresponsive". At this point, ctrl+alt+delete does nothing. I have to resort to a hard-reset (holding the power button down). Edit: Forgot to mention, opening new programs, trying to restart/shutdown my computer; traditionally, through the start menu... All does nothing. PC seems to have just frozen. /Edit.

It's strange because it doesn't just "crash", no bluescreen, no dump files, nothing. Everything just starts to 'hang'. Needless to say I've diagnostic'd everything I can think of, memory is all fine, hard-drives are squeaky clean, temperatures are a tiny bit on the high side of things (but have always been that way, and fine). Which leads me to suspect infection? Any thoughts? Ideas? Solutions? Tips? Boobs?

Using Chrome? I dumped Chrome for Firefox a while back, Chrome was just hanging up my machine when I was rendering. -

Which OS ?
We have noticed that MS, is very keen on getting rid of Windows 7, and has somehow messed with the update service, so that every time, windows checks for updates, the system basically hangs for 10-20 minutes. the SVChost file in charge of wuauserv will basically be using a lot of CPU power, or instead all the memory.
This seems to only affect systems with 4GB RAM or less though. (And might be a conspiracy in my head)

Otherwise. nothing in the windows System and Application logs ?
Can you roll back to before the issue started ?
Have you done a good scan with something like Antimalwarebytes/Spybot 1.6/Superantispyware recently ?

Terribly boring signature.

Hello chaps, thanks for the replies.

a) I do use chrome! Will switch to opera (never liked firefox) and see if the problem persists.

b) Win7, 64-bit. I really hope i don't need to upgrade to 10, or whatever they called it in the end. I persisted with WinXP and then XP 64-bit until making the jump to Win7.

c) Windows updates are off for me. I do the odd security update every now and then but they're never set to automatically go off. All dat bloatware. I naively thought 120gb for my OS partition would be enough and it's already reaching that...

d) Got monthly rollback restore points, tried going back to a time when I couldn't remember this happening. Still happens.

e) Did a bunch of scans with my usual repertoire (Kapersky and F-Secure) nothing malicious found. Except for that nude MSPaint drawing I did of Herfst, it's literally the devil.

Chrome is a bitch for slowing down everything ESPECIALLY when rendering. Its such a resource hog.
Theres alot of problems so it seems with Max and win10 so i wouldnt recommend making the jump.
Its lame but try adding the ram and cpu monitor gadgets to your desktop and see if anything makes them spike.
It looks really unprofessional but it works a charm!

EDIT: Could it be that because youre nearing your os drive size limit the pagefile is having trouble keeping everything loaded?

I gotta say, I have a 120GB C: drive. and even with Adobe collection, Blender, 3dMax Old edition, and a couple of other GFX programs, I am still only using about half the disk.

I know SSD's slow down when low on space, but exactly how this will effect the user, I havent seen yet.

Normally when a system hangs, the windows logs would produce something. at least an "X has timed out" info post.

Terribly boring signature.
