Random screen review!

My screen broke down and while I'm shopping for a new one, my friend loaned me one he had lying around. He said its kinda crappy but woah, was that an understatement..

The screen in question is the Sony PlayStation 3D Display. At first I was a little excited - hey 240hz and 3d right?? Something I had not tried before. Soon I discovered though - totally not available for PC use, I did manage to get some 3D going by using some hacked drivers off the interweb but it was limited to 24hz which just made my head hurt.

Did I mention how dim this screen is? Yeah, without the shutter action its barely usable during day time and if you want to have you're glasses on, you better be sitting in complete darkness. Not helped by the fact that its got no anti-glare coat at all, its pretty much a mirror.

The picture quality is total trash. Its got an extremely blue tint to it, not remedied by calibration. The blacks are just various grades of dark blue. The back light bleed is so ridiculous, you can spot it while surfing wikipedia. The gamut is choppy and sorely lacking in reach, especially in warm tones.

On top of that, the viewing angles are a joke. My eyes are around 90cm from the screen, sitting in the perfect center, you can see the pixels shift to crap at around half way to the edge of the screen. That gives a usable viewing angle of ~10 degrees, horizontally. Vertically it's even worse, 5 degrees or so.

My very first lcd (some cheap TN panel 1280x1024 samsung) looks phenomenal next to this. Its truly the worst screen I've ever seen, by far. Its been out for some 3 years now, I can't believe they still haven't pulled it from the shelves or that they even dared to sell it in the first place.

so, you would not recommend purchasing 40 of them for our office?

Speaking of screens, I wish I had a spare 2k to drop on one of those new iMacs.
