Ran out of Material Slots;
show user profile  Emphacy
This may be a relatively stupid question, but I appear to have run out of material slots in max, theres only 24 material slots, what do I do?

How do I get more, or what should I do to keep the materials and use more at the same time? Should I put them to library or propogate them to instances or something?

Help is much appreciated, I love this forum, loads of help and fast.
Thanks, Emphacy.

Sit quietly and wait....more slots should open up soon.

He's the lucky one - I've only got six slots on my version of max. I think I need to upgrade my license :)

Though it would seem that page is now missing, damn it.

Emphacy. The material editor is an editor not a library, just create a new material over the top of an old one or hit the delete button on one material and choose 'remove form editor only' option. Just becuase its not in the editor doesnt mean its not in the scene. To get back a material that isnt in the editor click on the eyedropper tool next to the material name and click on an object.

You'd think that after 20(30? 40?!?!)years of this, Autodesk would perhaps maybe change the workflow regarding materials and material editor slots ambiguity and confusion.

Nah. It's clearly perfect.

Well AD came here and filmed that 20 year anniversary thing, so it has technically been 20 years of development. With the end result being the Max material editor.
(actually what they didn't show was most the people they filmed had Softimage on their screens - also a 20 year old history).

i remember the good old days of 3dstudio max in dos mode when you only had 8 material slots.

now that was more than ample. if you have a scene requiring more than 8 materials you're either showing off or doing something wrong me thinks.

mind you, Error came up with a solution one day if im not mistaken.
