and use "world map" as your search.

EDIT: Oops, sorry misread your post... Check the BLUE MARBLE as I suggested. It is exactly what your looking for !

wouldn't an image like that distort the land masses proportions if textured around a sphere?

it already looks distorted, look at greenland, its all squished looking, I think if anything it will un-distort when you put it on a sphere, since really its impossible to have a flat map of a planet without distortion.
