One small question again. How would I go about raising the continents like in this picture? Is it done with color displacement? Because I tried that and it didn't quite look the same, so I wondered if there was another way.

Also.. how can I post my finished image as a jpeg/png, etc?
Thanks again

you should create your sphere, convert it to an editable poly, use the cut tool to cut in the countries then in polygon mode extrude the faces belonging to the land area.
to save your image as a jpeg/png you need to hit F10 this brings up the render dialogue, choose 'single' at the top, choose the size you want it, then further down hit the 'files' button and choose a format and location for your image then hit render at the bottom of the dialogue window, then upload you picture to photobucket.com and paste in the url it gives you like you did for the image you did.

thought id have a quick go myself (im like that around here :)
i did what i said before but instead of extruding i selected the 'land' polys after cutting them in and inverted the selection so it selected the 'water' polys and deleted them. then created two more spheres of the same size in the same space, one i gave a blue wireframe material, the other just a simple transparent blue material with a bit of gloss, then added a shell modifier to the 'land' object to give it some height. comes outs quite nice for a few minutes works :)
right, im off to bed :)

How do you model texture and animate a full length movie production?

Or you could do it the fast way, which is to find a map of the globe, take it into photoshop, fill in separate countries with white, and use that as a displacement map on a high poy sphere. Would take maybe 10 minutes, 3 or 4 if you're fast, and you find a globe texture with all the countries laid out with solid colors (for easy selecting ability in photoshop) and there are no lines to get in the way.

Thanks a lot everyone. One more thing.. (I don't want to make a new thread )
But does anyone know of a tool or a way I can make these sort of "speed lines"?

Thanks :)

Yes in 3dmax. I'm very new with it, so I don't really know what I can't do with the program as of yet. I don't have a tablet anymore so I'll try what giloosh here said, thanks!
