Raid1 issues
show user profile  9krausec
I have been running raid1 for some time now off of 2 1tb HDs. Been working great, but I was having some issues with space so I picked up another HD (a seagate 3tb Barracuda) that I wanted to boot off of, and have the other 2 mirrored with raid1 for data storage.

The 3tb HD is working great until I turn raid on in the bios. When that is set up, the OS won't boot. Read into GTP partitions, but you cannot boot from those so that is sort of useless.

Anyone have any advice they would be willing to offer?

I'm guessing that you have data on your discs before enabling the raid.
once you enable raid you need to prepare the disks before running.
I'm only guessing here might help if you post your raid configuration and HDDs configuration (Master, slave and where (SATA port #) )

in theory you shouldnt have problems mixing 2 hdds in raid and 1 single. In fact I run with 2 hdds in raid 0 and another single hdd.

alo what kind of error are you getting when booting ?

Thanks for the reply Gogodr

I cleaned out all information on all drives before I did a fresh install of the OS on the 3tb drive. Then when I enabled raid, the 3tb hard drive only showed up as 764 gigs, which confused me. When Raid was disabled from sata, the 3tb hard drive showed up to be 2tb and some change (reading up on this I figured out that unless it's a GPT partition that anything in excess of 2tb will have to be broken up.

As far as the slave and master setup, this might be where I am running wrong here. I didn't realize that the sata port number even mattered. I know there are 6gb/s and 3gb/s sata ports and that mattered, buit as far as slave and master, did not know.

I am running an Asus p8z68 deluxe.

ERROR- with raid turned off, it boots up normally, with raid turned on, I get some I/O error (sorry, didn't write it down) and I think this has something to do with how when raid was turned on, only 765 gigs of the 3tb were actually being read.

ANY help is much appreciated.

edit- Double post, but I shall make it useful-

guess my raid1 is set to be bootable.... This might be the issue, so I will try and figure out how to turn it off.

uhm.. I see no problems there.. it might be simpler...
have you checked your HDDs boot order?

Thank you for your help. The issue has been resolved. An out of date chipset drive seemed to be the cause conflicting with some prominent change within the operation of the currently produced hard drives was the issue.

All is working finally. Can't wait to get 3ds back up and running, hopefully my rendering issue will be fixed with a fresh install of the operating system, 3ds max and vray.
