Quicktime MOV lighter than source?
show user profile  ScotlandDave
I`m exporting something and noticed when exporting to MOV the video played back is `lighter` than the original? What`s that about?

[edit] that`s with h264, the mov mpeg-4 encoder seems to be alright..

Lighter? As in brighter?
Lighter would mean less MB, which is kinda the point of compressing uncompressed frames :P

if your exporting for mac vs pc there's a gamma change that happens... also, some codecs do the gamma by default.

there's fixes for the above out there, google up some.

feking macs. I like quicktime, but hate some of the crap that it does, lifting the blacks and reducing the contrast a bit.

Bolt's got it, it's something to do with the codec settings or something. We got it figured out at work, but I can't remember what the fix was. both H624, and previously with sorenson 3

Gamma Shift.

http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/2008/06/fix-quicktime-gamma-shift/

To get it to work for me in the past I had to add one step by changing the transparency back to "None" after selecting "Straight Alpha".

Yeah it's a problem with the H.264 codec. Bloody rubbish. I think I've seen Sorenson 3 darken things a bit but that's barely noticeable.

QT's encoding is very good imo as long as you're aware of potential mac/pc differences and stay on top of them.
