Quick question - cloning along a path
show user profile  Zman
What is the quickest way to clone objects along a path ?
Preferably keeping it dynamic (meaning that I can change the path afterwards and the clones will move with it(

Spacing tools requires you to replace objects after you've modified the path. Easy workaround is to instance your objects, group them, and replace them if you change the path.

path constraint

ie. 20 objects
100%/20= 5% increment per iteration

There's probably a script that'll do it if there is no built in tool.

Spacing tool is not dynamic.

I want to be able to close max, open max and still modify it at will.

I don't think there's a dynamic function in Max for that. Correct me if I'm wrong. As Simon says, you'd better be scripting that.

ya, I know about railclone.
Seems like a must plugin that shoulda gotten to be built in long ago instead of the primitive tools that max carry since the dos days ...

I have something working but...

> I want to be able to close max, open max and still modify it at will.

... this is something else entirely.

Pretty rudimentary but it should ease things up a little.

As Reeves advised, it's based on a path constraint.
With a given picked object, every time the path or a setting is changed, the current clones are deleted and rebuilt according to the new setting.
If the picked object is changed or cleared (or the script closed), the interactivity is gone! Not what you wanted, I know, but...

I'm thinking that a Compound Object would be more appropriate and more explicit. I'll try if I can find the time in the coming days. Don't hold your breath though.

Thanks but nope.
If you look closely, the entire computation is just two expressions. Very simple ones, like two subtractions and a division, or an multiplication and an addition. That's it. All the rest is just UI stuff, making all the buttons and spinners and checkboxes align nicely and forwarding their values where they're needed.
And if you look even more closely, you'll see that it's a little sloppy in places.
