| 2 questions: Which version of Windows 7 do I want?...and would upgrading my gfx card to one of the new ones be worth it? |
Dr. Jim |
Simple:
1) I'm a normal MAX user. No cray networking or admin stuff..etc...Which flavor of 64-bit Windows 7 do I want?
2) Current system has a 9800GTX+ card. I dont game. I dont deal in 50billion poly scenes. I would like better "looking viewports"? Would going to one of these new Nvidia 460 or 480..etc cards make a noticable difference in my life?

I bought the middle option, professional, the blue one anyway. Purely because I wanted the ability to run programs as whatever previous version of windows you wanted. The basic version doesnt have this. If I didnt want that then I would have plumped for the basic one.
Heres the version comparison

No version of Windows or gfx card is going to give you better looking viewports.
Max 2011 has slightly improved viewport rendering built in.
For that, you want Infinity Shader, 3 Point Shader or similar.
Upgrade your gfx. card if you need improved viewport speed. I'm guessing what you have can already do DirectX9 shader model 3, which is all max viewport shaders use at the moment anyway.

A better card will let you crank up the AA though. The card you have at the moment is pretty good though to be honest.

I have seen alot of the infinity shader...
SO...the IS will let me work with much better looking and complex materials/lighting..etc in the MAX viewports without screwing anything up? Simply a replacement for the shader set that is there now that is better?
What is the downside? Surely there is a downside.........?
btw - I know no version of windows will affect the viewports silly! ;-) I am upgrading to 64-bit (finally!!).

Not even a replacement for the shader set that is there now - an augmentation - you get both, simultaneously.
Infinity for the viewport & your standard shader for rendering, with the two synchronized if you want.
The downsides are :
1. It's still beta so you have to prod me if anything doesn't work / needs extending. I'll fix asap.
2. Docs are virtually non-existent, but you wouldn't you read them anyway :) Just post a how the fek do I xyz thread if anything isn't clear.
3. It doesn't raytrace, so you only get effects possible with a rasterizer.
4. No viewport shadows yet - I *think* I can get them running (better than the standard max viewport shader shadows).
Infinity Shader content is exportable to Infinity xsg format for visualization in our Infinity browser or Infinity WebGL javascript engine for uber 3D in a page with no coding or plugin requirements (IE users will require Chrome frame or Infinity browser). The WebGL interface is early so don't expect much yet, but it's coming together nicely.

Maybe im following you....
Does this affect or limit the materials I work with (e.g. Vray mats?).....OR does it only affect the viewports...and everything else renders as normal...with whatever renderer I am using?
eh?
I was at your site.....but couldnt find the Shader section with info/ video tutorials...etc..etc?

If you open a v-ray material in the material editor, you should be able to see a Direct Manager section - see it ? Select one of the two presets (they're both cr@p but will do to illustrate), active the preset & the viewport should change to use it. Configure as required for testing, then hit render - you'll notice your vray material settings are used for rendering, *not* the settings of the DirectX Manager viewport material. Infinity Shader works basically the same way, but is much more advanced than the presets. IS can sync with your main material, the example presents can't.

Install Infinity Professional & it'll install the shader for you. Needs an auth code. Authorization codes are free for beta testers in exchange for useful feedback.
There's no docs/info for the shader on the website yet, just what's on mf.
Video tuts - not yet - it's easy dude - just a material rollout with obvious parameters.
To be 100% clear - it only affects the viewports ...Everything else renders as normal...with whatever renderer you're using. The only requirement is the material type has to have DirectX Manager access. VRay materials have this. You *can* sync between the two so parameters are shared, but that's up to you, you can turn that feature on/off as you please.
