Question about spline modelling
show user profile  drmoreau
Ok guys, been modelling for years but almost always get away with basic shapes, booleans, etc....

The object I am working on now I have not been able to create with a standard box so I drew it as a spline. The shape is great, but when I do the extrude modifier the "segments" only appear on the sides of the mesh. I want segments on the top and bottom faces as well. I do a lot of detail by using the extrude command on select faces but this gives me only one huge face to work with.

If there's no way to automatically add segments to a spline is there a way to get a box (or other object) to conform its shape to the spline? That's what I want, an object in the shape of my spline but with lots of segments to play with.

Surface modifier will do the trick.

First you need to ensure every poly is 4 sided else it won't work.

Add the modifier and turn down the tolerance to something like 0.001. Reduce (or increase) the number of steps (iterations). To see the poly version before committing/collapsing the modifier add an "edit poly" or "turn to poly."

When happy, collapse.

P.S. Didn't say before, cause it's redundant and all, but surface modifer only works for editable splines (actually, probably all spline shapes, not that I've checked it out).

How do I make each poly 4 sided? That's what I don't understand. My object has a LOT more than 4 sides.

Refine Connect it all up.

It's in the menu on the right. I use refine-linear-connect most of the time, less buggy.

P.S. I thought you said you'd been modelling for years!?

yes, I have been modelling for years but again I never do anything with splines.

I know about the refine/connect tool but how do I use that to make my many sided spline 4 sided? sorry, I just don't get the concept I guess.

ok, used the refine tool to split the spline up into 4-sided sections and the surface modifier now lays a surface onto it...but it's still just the sections that I manually split up.

Isn't there a way to fill it with "segments" automatically like when you create a new box shape or like the sides of the spline shape when using the extrude modifier? It would take me a week to go in and manually add all of the segments that I need.

[edit] Just read your response. Re-read my first response... or watch the video.

Ok, got it looking like a patch surface now but I can't figure out how you extruded it. I looks like you have your selection set at "segment" but I can't tell what hotkeys you are using. Looks like all of the outer lines are selected somehow and then cloned below. If I select everything and drag down (in z axis) while holding shift it clones it...but just the lines, the points don't drop down and connect.

Yeah, mouse pointer wasn't showing for some reason. I clicked "Connect Copy" in the right hand menu before dragging down. You can see it in the vid if you watch closely.

this is driving me insane. starting to remember why I don't work with splines. I got it working but two sections have gaps (absolutely no idea why) and it looks like there are a ton of flipped normals. What did I do wrong?

P.S. Thanks for all of the help getting me this far, I would never have figured it out.

nevermind that. I played around with the layout of the four-sided splines and fixed it.

No, most probably you have two verts not touching each other. Quick fix: select those verts (where the gaps are) and click "fuse" (right-hand menu again).

[edit] Alright. Glad it's working.

Oh, and splines kick ass once you get the hang of them, I use them all the time.

thank you very much for the help. I will probably be using them more now that I get them a little.

at one point (years ago) I used them a little but I got out of modelling for quite a few years and am having to relearn some stuff.
