ptex madness
show user profile  cbflex
I'm about... to blow up.
So I discovered what a wonderful tool Mudbox is. It's so much better and faster at painting textures onto models than photoshop is.
However, I've finally run into a wall.
Say I modelled a head, and it's in low poly naturually to make it easy to animate, and then in the final render I'd be applying a meshsmooth modifer. So everthing should be all peaches and cream. Wrong.
I'm trying to paint ptex onto my model in mudbox. The problem is that if I paint onto the low poly model in mudbox, then bring the object and the ptex file into max and then apply the meshsmooth modifier, the texutre is really out of place and everything.
The only way I can successfully paint my model using ptex is if I bring the meshsmoothed modell into mudbox, paint it, and then extract the mudbox object file that is the entire model collapsed, back into the 3ds max. This renders the model correctly except now I have a crazy subdivided mesh that will be impossible to animate...
What do I do? How can I paint my model using mudbox and ptex, bring it back into max and be able to use the meshsmooth modifer ontop of it so animating it would be easy?
Is this even possible? Should I just paint onto UVs in Mudbox instead?

I'm guessing by the lack of replies, that not many people have experience with ptex...

Import the textured, high-poly version and SkinWrap it to the rigged, low-poly one, then animate the low one and render the high.

It's a modifier that allows one mesh to be deformed by another.
