Protest day!
show user profile  Mr_Stabby

If you guys havent noticed a whole bunch of sites today are blacked out to draw attention to SOPA/PIPA(or ACTA if you're in europe or asia). There are country/area specific petitions going around, im sure you can find the one for you.. try and spend some time today in effort to tank these evil laws. Your freedom of expression is literally depending on it.

I seem to think downloading a pic of oprah then using it without getting the rights from the copyright holder is illegal now too?

Doesn't mean you'd get called up for it, but so why would you in the future?

Reeves. It's not about what's illegal and what's not with regards to copyright. It's about the American government having the ability to knock your site off the internet without due process.

Where I work we are major advocates against SOPA. Hey, the internet is our bread and butter anything that takes away our freedoms from it is our damned responsibility to stop it.

So, how does a US law affect you foreign folk?

Well here's the bit, say have a 3D blog and you read some kick ass article on some other 3D site that you want to share on your blog. Say your blog is hosted in the UK and this 3D site is hosted in the US. You decide to link their story through your blog and the site has deemed this a violation of their copyright. Say our company hosts your website and we manage your DNS. Well if we got a complaint from the copyright holder of a copyright violation, we would have to legally comply by taking down your domain (not your site's contents) but your domain from being resolvable over the internet. We'd have to direct all traffic to some government antipiracy and copyright information page. All because you thought an article was cool and wanted to share it.

It goes above that, not just the DNS issue. We're talking about Deep packet sniffing meaning that the government and us as a hosting provider would have to use tools that break your security measures so we can inspect you traffic to see if you're doing things legit.

Not just DNS takeover, but IP blocking can be ordered as the backbone level (that's the companies that provide internet to the internet) so that they are blocked regionally. Like no one in the US would be able to see your site in the UK (which is bad for business).

SOPA/PIPA are bad. Very bad.

(\/) (°,,,°) (\/) Woop woop woop!
