Proceedural maps rendering and displaying differently

I have a simple 10m x 10m plane with no mapping applied, I put a texture on it with a cellular map in the diffuse slot, set to chips, tiling is 1 to 1, size is 2.5. I have done nothing else to it but my render is a totally different scale to my viewport. This seems to happen with any procedural maps I've tried, noise, dent, smoke, marble (but not checker for some reason)

If I apply UVW mapping it remains the same, if I reduce the scale of the mapping the render will reduce too but it remains bigger than the viewport.

Am I missing something obvious?

yes, max viewport is only capable of showing uv mapped placement while your map probably has object or world based mapping on (switch to explicit map channel)
