ProBoolean problem
show user profile  vegas
i want to make a simple ashtray using cylinder and proboolean,
when i finished it, everything seems to be perfect,
until i gave meshsmooth modifier, it ended up with this problem,

i know there's a lot of ways to make an ashstray, but for me, i think it's the easiest way to make it..can someone help me with this problem?

How's this the easiest way to make it if you didn't actually made it right?

yes it's easy to cut the holes, but when it comes to smoothing modifiers, you'll have to learn how they work.
I don't see the wire clearly enough, but i bet your booleans left tons of odd sided polygons (non 4-sided), and smooth doesn't like that.
And anyway, if you plane to smooth it, why don't you just poly model it.... Grab one polygon from top and pull it down, chamfer the looping edges on top, put smooth on top, and voila

If you're using Power Booleans, use the quad option to make sure you don't get that result. Should work...

That is by far not the easiest way to do it because of the amount of cleanup needed after booleans.

here, i havent done one of these tuts in a while so here you go...

1. Create a cylinder with lots of sides (create enough so that three sides will be the width of each cigarette dip (you'll see what i mean further on) i used 60 sides.

2. Inset the top face to the thickness of the ashtray whilst in polygon mode using the inset tool.

3. keep the same face selected and use the extrude tool to take it down into the body

4. inset the face again. (this helps later on when using the loop tool.)

5. inset the bottom face for the same reason as described in step 4.

6. select a single polygon on each of the sides at the top to represent each cigarette dip.

7. move the selected polys down to form the base of the dips (you see now why i said choose the amount of sides so sides equal the size of the dips)

8. select these edge loops (4 loops in total), to do it quicker than selectind every single one just select one edge on each loop and click the 'loop' button at the top of the modifiy panel whilst in edge mode. (this is where steps 4 and 5 help as the inner edge and bottom edge wouldnt loop if you hadnt done those steps.)

9. keeping the those edges selected give them a small chamfer, (this gives the end 'smoothed' object a sharper edge, the smaller the chamfer, the sharper the edge after smoothing)

10. add a smoothing modifier, this is after giving it 2 iterations

hope it helps

thanks mr grotey for your short tut..and thanks guys for your help and comment..appreciate it a lot

Good show Grotey, wanted to do the same just didn't have time to throw it together. Proper modeling technique is always the best option IMO.

And what was wrong with MY explanation????
Nooo, mr wise guy had to make a tutorial with pictures....

Hehe joking, hey grotey, how about making a site with all those tutorials on it.
I'd be willing to team up to do both a site and more tutorials, if you don't consider me too much of a noob that is.
