Looks like a viewport display glitch. If you minimize Max, then maximize again, does it disappear? What kind of graphics card you using?

First task is to see if there is a new driver available for the radeon card.

I've had this happen on several machines, in several programs (usually a program with a 3d viewport). Sometimes, it happens when I have multiple programs open, I think sometimes there's a conflict with the graphics card. Do you have any other 3d programs open?

Sometimes it's a window that's stuck, like yours. Other times it's everything that's stuck accept for a small portion of the viewport.

Another thing, did you install any maxscripts lately? I installed one once that screwed with my viewport and made every camera movement stay on screen so everything started ghosting on top of each other till it was a white out (actually I crashed max before that happened, but you get the idea, it was screwed).

This is a known issue with 32 bit Max 2010 on Windows 8 with Radeon cards. Use 64 bit, or upgrade to a more recent Max.

*EDIT*

And yes, it's that specific. Two guesses how I know. lol If you're on Win 7 it might be something else.

Since video cards were being mentioned I have a question (not to hijack).

Nvidia vs AMD for video cards used in CG software. I'm under the notion that Nvidia is more compatible in general. Is this true or false? Does it matter? I always have gotten Nvidia stuff but am curious.

I used to always buy AMD but my last two cards have been nVidia. Don't ever really see myself buying another AMD card unless someone holds a gun to my head or waterboards my papercut face in vinegar.

For what it's worth... I've had equal amounts of problems with both over the years. My other computer uses a GTX560, and it had an HD5770 before that. The one I'm currently on uses an R9 270. They all have their ups and downs. Some like D3D rendering, some like OpenGL. Some have issues regardless.
