Hi, I am having trouble making a preview file in Max 2011. I go Tools > Grab viewport > Create animated sequence file... and I choose my preferences settings. When I click Create I get a warning message 'No preview file'. What can I do to fix this?
Can anyone help me? I just want to see if my blocking is working. Cheers
PS. not too computer savvy so please speak in plain words :)

Thanks! I think I can manage. I know Maya so it shouldn't be to much of a stretch. I am only using it for animation. Just the lingo that some times gets me.

Hmmmm, are you trying to render out a preview of the viewport as it plays through the time line? Or are you after an actual render?
I assume from the term "blocking" that you'd want a real time preview or the likes... does playing the animation in 3ds max itself not work well? (frame rate issues?) ... just trying to understand what you're after here.

Hi Dave. I would like an low quality avi of my animation. (in Maya they are called 'playblasts' which I think is the equivalent to 'previews' in Max) The file is too heavy to play real-time in the viewport unfortunately. I have created my key poses for the animation and would like to see if the timing is working. Cheers

thanks for the suggestion DannyMax. It didn't work running max at the adnim level unfortunately. Here is a print screen of the error message in case that help in anyway. I can't believe it is this hard just to playback my animation as an avi.

Did you try Animation > make preview Then look into my documents > 3ds max > previews (max will probably just play it but that sometimes calles windows media player which I don't have set up so it pops up a install wizard)

Hi Horizon, thanks for the suggestion! I think 'Tools > Grab Viewport > Create Animated Sequence File' in 2001 is the old 'Animate > make preview'. I can't see Make Preview under the Animation menu. I get the error message when I try to Create Animated Sequence File though and no file is created in the 3d max previews folder.

I have also had this same issue using Max 2011 on windows 7. i assume its the same in vista. problem is caused by windows media player (which the file auto loads in after its rendered it out)
after the first render WMP has the file "in use" and max cant overwrite the file anymore and gives you that error. open the task manager and close wmp from there each time you want to render out your preview and you shouldn't get that error anymore (annoying i know but its a wmp problem not max :)
