What would prevent dialog from playing in a bootleg movie?
show user profile  Spear Chuck
I've acquired several movies and when played on the PC ambient sound plays but not the dialog (channel?). I burned a mp4 to dvd and tried to play it in the dvd player but I think the unit's to old for mp4.

I wonder if a security strip is blocking the dialog from playing, the picture plays great.

I shouldn't have to change the 5.1 surround sound to plain stereo, do I?

I have other video that plays fine, but not bootleg copies of movies.

Any suggestions outside going out and purchasing the movie?

standing on the rooftop of a building nearby a drive in theater with one of these aimed at one of the cars.

might hear lots of sex though.

He who says it cannot be done is interrupting the man doing it.

this is no problem.

simply bootleg a copy of the script from teh interwebz, organise a party, invite some friends round & get them to voice the parts missing from ur video. et voila. sorted.

I've never understood the point in pirating movies.. The potential loss in quality through re-encoding vs the cost of a genuine bluray movie.. That aside I'm sure you'll find an answer but not here :)

I hope you own the original, and this is "fair use", otherwise, consider our rules on the forum here please.

It sounds like the video has been encoded with a codec your machine doesn't support. Try playing it with VLC.

just come across media player classic. probably the most hardcore techie windows video player out there. should be able to use that to identify the missing codec.

http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/download-media-player-classic-hc.html

respect for copyright is important to ensure all of us working in the industry receive fair reward for the hard work that went into any creative endevour, etc. if the piece in question is distributed without restriction, it's not a bootleg.

"I shouldn't have to change the 5.1 surround sound to plain stereo, do I?"

If the source is 5.1 encoded and you're playing it on a stereosystem then yes, switch to plain stereo.

Swede it like they did in Be Kind Rewind.
Get the script, or make your own from memory, and recreate the movie.

Chuck, You understand why I have to ask, I hope.
If Stereo doesn't work, try (as suggested above) VLC or MPC. Both support a plethora of formats.

also this : http://bluesky23.yu-nagi.com/en/#DXVAChecker
direct link : http://bluesky23.yu-nagi.com/dxvac/DXVAChecker64_2.6.2.zip

hit the "check ... decoders" button at the bottom then select your file.

will give you way more information than you'll ever want about a video format.

this is obvious to anybody who's ever owned a broken pair of earphones, shorting stereo channels results in loss of some frequencies, most notably the pitch human voice is at :p its not a codec issue, just that you're trying to mix the wrong channels when going from 5.1 to stereo
