Premiere CS5 - How do I get an avi's alpha channel to be transparent?
show user profile  Spear Chuck
I have an .avi on a video track in Premiere, I have larger .mp4 clip on the track below it. When I rendered the .avi in Max the alpha channel was made black.

Where in Premiere do I assign transparency to black just for that track/avi?

Actually I figured it out! I had hit Submit post but forgot to assign this fine non-max related Group and when I went to shut down I saw this dialog box was still open...duh.

The clip I edited was off Meet the Press from Sunday. I put a flaming logo on top of the NBC footage for an exercise in futility.

As punch drunk as I was (from lack of sleep), I put the clip on Youtube! Then chickened out and deleted it.

Now if only I could remember how to do it again tomorrow...err...later on today.

> .avi has an alpha channel?

think so, if you want it - depends on the codec as avi is just a container.

Yup. I can't remember which codec, but we used to use one of them. When you'd play the AVI in media player, two windows would come up, one with the alpha channel.

I've never been able to render out any AVI from max with alpha.
Render as TGA's or PNG's and it'll be all better.

If i recall.....Use "none" compression....colors set to millions+

but yes,..why, for the love of god do you need to use avi? (or any video format ftm)?

well dr jim, if you were wanting to put it into a scene & stream it over the interwebs, you'd probably want it in a highly compressed video format. for regular maxing, a png sequence or whatever would do the job as manny says.

AS? wtf are you talking about?

The final output of a compressed edit from Premiere,.....has nothing to do with the source compression on the output of max.

I didn't say it did. I said you might want to use compresed video with an alpha channel for some real-time purposes. maybe a green screen'd character (although you could just key that out anyhow) or overlaid ui or whatever. never mind.

edit: ta. ok. I'll shut up.

dude....thats random. Maybe I should point out that "if he was going to print the frames he should convert them to CMYK" ?

He's talking about compositing in Premiere. So with that said....the point about NOT rendering as a video file still stands.

(slaps AS).

btw - I like the holiday sig.

It took me a while to work out where the question is in this post. I found it, and the answer is here, just use a different key type.

Slaps AS for not levering in a 3D browser.
