poser character into max
show user profile  stevey2shoes
Hi somebody mentioned that even if I import poser characters into MAX, that they still wouldn't compare to hand made MAX characters why is this? importing them seems the easiest way around and from the MAX characters ive seen there doesn't seem to be much in quality or realism. I know someone said poser probably doesn't have a normal maps, I wouldn't know because I struggle to see what a normal map is, some say its a way of determining bumps, if so, poser has bump maps, but so does MAX, so I'm at a loss. steve

Poser models aren't well set up for animating. It can be done, but something created specifically for animation would be more suited to it. If you want to user Poser models in Max, nothing is stopping you.

"and from the MAX characters ive seen there doesn't seem to be much in quality or realism."

Sorry, what? The quality and realism is on you buddy. If you want a realistic character, make one.

I found this image in a three second Google search. I suggest using better search terms!

It's like having paint and a canvas. It's not the canvas's fault if the painting sucks. It's all in the skill of the artist.

You seem to be judging max, when it's the artist that does all the work. Max will not "hold you back". You have to have the skills to use it. Poser requires almost zero skill. Because of what it is, Poser makes better humans than you can. Max has not got the limitations of Poser, but it doesn't give you anything to start with like Poser does.

Your attitude suggests that you are not sure that Max is up to the task, and you might need better tools. That is ridiculous. No offence.

Oh wait, is this the same guy who thought Max and poser were alike? As in, a "make full character" button? A few weeks back? I do hate repeating myself.

Yup. He really doesn't listen or care to advance his skills, and seems more concerned about making sure he's downloaded the right software when he should be doing tutorials.

I don't think he will maintain an interest in 3D.

Yes that's me,
I was actually asking a straight forward question about the easiest way to make or use characters, so it seemed logical to think importing ready made characters and eventually modifying them would be the clever way round.
I also asked a question about normal maps vs bump maps, which every one seems to have missed, unless they've replied while im typing this, and, instead, taken my post as an attack on MAX and everyone has "rallied round in defence", and accused me of asking the same questions.

I'm not quite sure why I'm defending myself here but, as far as showing interest, its the first thing I search for when I switch my computer on, and am currently researching the different courses available to get proficient in this, and, as a straight forward, fairly typical beginner question has now escalated into outright sarcasm, maybe a course is the better option.
Id like to think that at least then Id get straight answers to straight questions, instead of saying things like yeah its possible, so just do it, its not that easy, as Im sure you all remember from your early days, but are mysteriously forgetting.

I apologise to those that have genuinely offered help, but that's what I was asking for, hence coming onto a forum, I didn't expect a simple question, that I may have repeated but only because I still haven't found and answer, to be misconstrued as validation to "jump to the defence of MAX".
its not about that.

Goal: wish to create a painting

Option A:
Use a canvas, a stand, different colors of paints and various paintbrushes.

Option B:
Use a sheet of stickers with images of the human figure. Tear it loose from the sheet. Place it on the canvas.

A: 3dsmax

B: poser

If you are happy with what stickers give you, and this is more then enough for many people depending on their goals/situations, then you should choose poser and enjoy it.

If you are unhappy with what stickers give you its time to learn. 3dsmax is a fine 3d package with a relatively smooth learning curve compared to other packages and an excellent, excellent helpfile.

Choose. Its that simple.

DrJim.. thats way too awesome to be poser! Please tell me that is 3dsmax!
