Polygons appearing differently in Render
show user profile  jacktsussexuni
Ive been cutting down the polys and reshaping them to smooth up my car that ive been building. It all looks fine but when I do a render it looks like my car has been in a horrible accident. There are no idle vertices and the polys appear flat.

Attached is an image which shows what the car looks like in the viewport and what it looks like with the render.

How can i get this to look the same in the render?

There's a link in the source but it doesn't work even when copied
*ttps://studydirect.sussex.ac.uk/file.php/11605/moddata/forum/19882/141902/veyron_poly_prob.jpg

Not sure, but I don't think https link without some sort of login makes sense

sorry my fault, was copying this over from my university forums as noone had replied to me there and stupidly forgot youd have to login.

Heres a new link

It's to do with your smoothing groups, I believe.

you are seeing triangulation, post your modifier stack since some modifiers like to chop the mesh into triangles

Yup, smoothing groups. Max viewport will show polygons as one, but if the 2 triangles the polygon is made of are not planar, and no smoothing is applied to that polygon, it's bound to show

Not sure how that "chopping" would show in the render and not in viewport. Besides, the scroll on his modifier stack is just long enough to hold maybe one more or even no entries under the expanded edit poly.

sorry about the long reply time...

This is really annoying me now, its happening all over the car

Im fiddling with the smoothing groups but havent been able to get it right yet. Ive tried making my polys planar with 4 corners etc

I should have done a boxier car for my first attempt!

Anyway does anyone have any good advice on how to sort the smoothing groups. Ive watched a couple of videos but its not that clear.

"I should have done a boxier car for my first attempt!" nah man. just nah

to sort smoothing groups the lazy way, just add a 'smooth' modifier, check both boxes and adjust the smoothing value from 30 to whatever angle looks nice and works. usually 60 is ok.

the proper way is to do it through edit poly, by selecting groups of polygons which should be smoothed together and assigning their own number.

He who says it cannot be done is interrupting the man doing it.
