Polygon Budget Calculator
show user profile  cbflex
Hey, does anyone know of any programs that calculate for you a polygon budget, that for example tells you how much slower your render will be with double the polygons and such?
Like a system diagnostics tool, like for instance when you want to buy a video game and you check out the systemlab requirments website that checks out your system specs and tells you how well your computer would handle different video game...
Any ideas?

More polygons don't necessarily mean longer renders. I think it's too subjective to be simply calculated.

polygon budget depends on your scene requirements.

mental ray or vray will give you that information.

AS, can you tell me which bit of mental ray can predict render times based on polygon count?

it doesn't predict, it calculates.

ie. you double the count, run a render and time how long it took.

sorry - you want a magic wand & there isn't one. just have to experiment.

too many configuration options for simplistic answers to mean anything which is what you were getting at nik.

Ah, I got you. I though you meant there was some magic tool!

As AS said, you will have to use trial and error. Other things make a bigger difference than poly count alone, like sampling, GI, diffuse reflection, etc.

obviously there is a linear amount of time that scales with poly count due to renderer having to go over the definition of each polygon but that amount is tiny, for instance a 1000000 polygon flat plane will take 5 more seconds to render then a 1 polygon plane but that in relation to the time it takes for the renderer to do other things is just insignificant. The much more important factor in this is the extra work renderer has to do because of the extra definition available like raytracing - the effects of the added polygons depends massively upon how many faces/lighhts are interactnig withh the object and there is only one a way to calculate how long it wii take which means rendering it.
