Poly modelling a shaped 'hole' in an object.

Fek.

OK,..simply enough.

I've got a nice mesh. Now,...I want to put nice raised dimple in it. Kind of the opposite of an indentation on a golf ball.

So I do 2 sets of nice slices, 2 slices from left to right 'around' my model,...and 2 more slices top-bottom around my model. Where they cross (forming a square) is where I want my hole.
I removed that face, so I can access my border edge.

Now,..at this point it smooths nice,...a square hole becomes a circle.
BUT the minute I either extrude that border down and scale it in,.....OR if I chamfer it then extrude/move the new border.....it doesnt stay a circle anymore.

In fact the chamfer's new sets of circumventing edges cause an even tighter 'square' crease.
Simply extruding this 'square' border edge, yields a square raised bump when smoothed.

wtf?

thx guru's

Ah...HA.

OK....leaving the square poly there,.....selecting it and using 'bevel'....WILL work fine. Much easier than dealing with borders and edges...etc.......BUT

BUT this just doesnt seem like the right way to do it. Seems like there is a more 'proper' way....????

Looks like its me again :)

wellim guessing that after chamfering the lower edge, you arent collapsing the triangle edge that gets created, see the gif below

Mmmm...nipples.

YES!
That is the fekkin step I was missing!

Ironically,...by bevelling the poly twice, I got the same end shape you did.
I just did it differently....

Out of curiosity, is one technique 'proper' and the other not so much? Or does it really not matter?

i doubt there is a 'proper' way but by using my method you will end up with a more averaged chamfer, as the angle of the face will be worked out at half the angle between the two others (if you get what i trying to spit out) whereas yours is a very rough guestimate (unless you do the math obviously) thats the only difference i know of
