In a game would you feel bothered if even though you move on WASD and mouse , at a point you have to let go the mouse and go both hands on keyboard ? (( like casting a complex spell pressing a combination of keys in order ))

example scenario
lets say your are a mage in a party. have mobs around you (( MMORPG ))
get your party to lure mobs and you go in the middle. Press a key let go your mouse and start making your big spell ( like a super explosion thing or something alike )

Yeah, i've played games like oblivion and taking your hand off of the mouse would really interrupt gameplay...

it would be horrible. however, if this is reserved for extremely powerful spells, i think it would be acceptable because it would make it sort of like hey this guys standing still... must be casting something. shoot him!

Why not let the spell be selected in a different way - using virtual interface instead of having to take your hand off the mouse. Example: Right-click and hold opens a "Wheel" of selections, and one of the selections is spells, and if you mouse over it, further selections open up, such as spell levels, and if you mouse over a spell level, you get a list of spells available for that level, and if you select one of them, you will cast them.
You know, sort of like the [Spacebar] menu in Maya or the Quad Menus in Max. Except visually nicer.

or you could use the new motion controls and wave your hands/ wave a glowy ball for consoles...

I voted yes. This would greatly annoy me. Do you really need more buttons than what you have available with your left hand ?.

Try the game Avencast, its a single player RPG sort of thing.
A neat thing about it is that you dont really have enough hotkeys for all your spells, so instead you need to do key-combinations in order to cast your spells.. A little bit like old fighter games.

down-down-left followed by left or right mouse button would cast a specific spell for instance.

At first its kinda weird, but during the game it starts growing on you.
Its not perfect though, and just like the old fighter games, you will fail at casting the spell now and then.

Terribly boring signature.

TiMoN:: that is kind of what I was trying to make but I though about making the player release the mouse to make him feel more like doing something important.

since it was for a special skill. it was like this

the controls I assigned were WASD for movement
r to start special spell :: it shows a menu, select special spell->
the do a combo with WASD and u i o p which should take something about say 10 seconds to cast if the player did it right. cancel if wrong in the combo.

I'm not giving up of the concept but going to redo the method since lots of ppl don't really like the idea of letting go the mouse for a moment.

user interface should be as simple as possible. I dislike games in general that force me to use to many keys on my keyboard. Use circular selection menus or something, with the possibility of easy key assignment.

If you want to implement complex spell casting just have a spell failure percentage implemented and casting duration. That introduces a risk of casting such spells without making in physically frustrating.

the problem about making it automatic like in most MMORPGs is that players get bored because it gets too repetitive and simple.
I want to make something so the player haves a challenge everytime while playing.

I though about this kind of system for magic caster. for physical combat I have another system that only uses mouse clicks and movement gestures being left click the primary hit, right click the secondary hit and use WASD along with the clicks to make combos like in a fighting game. That way the player is always in control of what the characters doing not only doing a click to " attack and do that skill " but having to actually perform certain actions to make the character do the skill in a fluent way .


over the night I though about other system to make the special spells.
Loading through time and instead of u i o p I'll just make the user use the clicks on the mouse in a different sequence for each spell cast. Still have to refine it a little more. maybe will make an explanation video next time before making another poll.

have anything else to say about your game? an actual member here making an mmo (instead of some guy my age thinking he can outdo blizzard alone with no programming knowledge) should be very interesting.

well actually I have been working on it passively for 2 years, have a small team, contacts with some sponsors interested already, contacts with some institutions where I can get the ppl I still need.

Err... do they? What sort of research have you done on this exactly? If I had to press anymore goddamn buttons in WoW my head might explode. What MMORPG's have you played and compared to your own idea?

In fact... what MMORPG's have you played at all? Because I don't know if you've noticed or not, but you tend to kill a lot of things in these games, and you want to make the fighting system a chore?

ha yes, that brings back memories of my first Nintendo 8bit, after half an hour of crazyness I felt like my thumb could drop of at any time. If people get bored it's not because they don't have enough buttons to press it's because the game sucks.
