Photoreal lanscapes in MAX?
show user profile  Dr. Jim
OK,....looking at Photoreal lanscape options....
Think large fields, trees,..mountains in distance,...etc...etc.

Products like Vue Extreme seem to offer incredible imagery, details all within quite an acceptable render time. Not sure how the manage poly's or such.....but it seems like the level of detail they offer would cripple MAX (in terms of polys) OR would give 3 hour frame times. Not too mention they offer incredible ease of use to build these enviro;s.

BUT,...they are not MAX,....and do require workarounds and such for getting the final image with MAX models/particles/....etc all living within the terrain.
(Please dont mention Vue 7 Extremes max integration....it sux donkey balls).

Just wondering what options you guys may know of to get large, highly detailed REALISTIC terrains in MAX?

thx

Hire Grotey.

Seriously though, I have no idea. Does it really have to be IN max though? I thought this is what all that clever compositing milarky is used for?

Dont get me wrong,...it doesnt HAVE to be in MAX at all! Even if it is all in MAX I would render seperate passes anyway.....

By using 2 seperate apps, it does introduce the whole camera matching/camera data exchange..etc...etc. And ofcourse matching lighting and all that.
I couldnt find any terrain apps that will share that data with MAX. Again,...Vue says it will,....but after talking with some users in who tried it in their pipeline, it was very, v ery dodgy.

So any options,...whether IN MAX, or via a seperate program...I dont care....as long as it is integrated....

thx

Only alternative that comes to mind is Landsim from Bionatics - haven't seen many renders, so can't say if the quality is photoreal or not.

EDIT: Sorry about that... I just visited their site... I thought that they had max exporter for it... looks like they don't...

EDIT 2:
World Builder has LiveLink feature ( 3dsmax support) http://www.digi-element.com/wb/index.htm

"...World Builder is a world generation software with landscape, sky, lighting, water and wind systems. It includes a 'LiveLink' plugin connection to Max allowing you to combine your animations and scenes with the World Builder environments seamlessly...."

eh......tis true,.....and the quad/world machine stuff doesnt look too good.

The only one I see that actually looks good is the Vue stuff,....but fek,...it is buggy and not cheap either.

Lord,.....unbeknownst to me, landscaoe generation is apparantley right up there with fluids!

fek

....maybe I will rethink shot to be in white limbo........

Yes, you're screwed :P

Just out of curiosity - what kind of problems you had with vue xstream ? I knew it sounded too good to be true...

Here's a problem I have with vue6 in max: it would be nice to see where you're putting things!
too bad, you can't. you have to guess. this should not take 6 tries to get right! Maybe vue7 is better.
don't know

Hi Dr Jim. Years ago I had a chance to play about on dreamscape a bit and it seemed very powerful. Its a max plugin, so great integration. The user galleries do look a bit rubbish, but i'm sure i got some quite nice stuff going on with it.

heres a linky
