Photo Workshop 1

OKAY OKAY you guys win.

This week's assignment:

Miniature studio.

What to get?

Piece of black paper (A2/A1 would do)
Tape
2 desktop lights (or 3.. or more)

Now create yourself a nice product-studio. Tape the paper to a wall so you have a background. Make sure half of it is on your ground surface. Like this:

Then see for yourself how to get the light setup nice.

I think since we are maxers and we all know a 3 point light setup that the basic one should be easy. Now play a bit with it.

Take a small object and go.

To go further:
Instead of aiming the light at the target, aim it 180degrees the other side with a piece of colored paper in front of it. The light will bounce via the paper to your subject giving a bit of color to your scene. Mind the shadows here...

Now go and play. I will buy some black paper tomorrow too and start playing with it.

About the workshops
- It's NOT a competition.
- Pictures for the workshop will be posted here, anyone can comment so not just me (thank God).
- When the next workshop starts, you can still post here and get comments. There is no deadline.
- Pictures have to be made for this workshop. Don't place stuff here that accidentaly fits the team. YES I do have some of these studio shots but NO wasn't for this workshop...
- Post as many attempts as possible. Show us you played with idea's and tried new things.
- Try new things and teach us. What workd good for you? What totally sucked? SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE with the picture!! Don't just post stuff!
- Post more comments than pictures. We're here to learn from eachother, not just to show ur stuff.

Think that's it for now. :)

Have fun!

I am pretty limited on resources, I tried a similar setup last week, where I put a neon light behind the actual paper with some interesting results.

UPDATE

heres another one:

I enjoy experimenting with dim soft lights, I dont really like the regular "product" shots, they are often too generic. I found some larger paper now, gonna go around gather more lights see what I can do :)

thanks for this great thread by the way!

how the heck can you be limited on resources whilest all you need is 2 desk-lights (3.50 dollar?) and a piece of paper (2 dollar tops?) :P

ur thumbnail looks cool, I tried that with my 1D cam hehe. :) But seriously push yourself a bit and let's come around with some studio shots!

Her an example I did with 2 lights and one piece of A2 paper:

wooot, so exciting.

So why black paper? Wouldn't that have the effect that you have no bounce light as all light gets absorbed? Also the only place I know where to find black paper that size is an art shop and paper there is expensive (not that I want to be cheap or anything but I have a ton of white and colored paper that size but no black as I don't use black for drawing)

PS: thanks for doing this mate!!!! YO DA MAN

wouldnt a miniaturestudio look more like this ?
all you need is some batteries and leds.

I'll contribute with some pictures later.
It's also fun to experiment with different kinds of materials to bounce your light.

You could for example use aluminium foil to get some kind of distorted caustic reflections or
use colored calque/foil or
with an semitransparent ikeabox you can make yourself a softbox,...

Every photo workshop has someone with limited resources and someone else with a broken camera.
It's the law.

It's basically 2 soft boards behind and left. A small board covered with aluminum foil for removing more shadows (which did not work much). Canon 590IS camera. Little Ps.

Trying to work it out better to get some nice shots. Need to find a better place where there is enough fill light.

New setup, Just a few pieces of A3 (I think) white paper, one car mechanic light and a normal lamp. I like the gradient that I got going on there. its made by placing the neon light behind the paper and giving it something to reflect of. There is also a warmer lamp from the front diffused by a large paper (placed slightly to the left). God im so pissed off, I created the whole diagram and then saved it as GIF without realizing it doesnt support the mf bg color.. and now I cant get it back! ah!
