Pectoral Cross
show user profile  Coxy
So I thought I would start my own thread, bite the bullet and take the hit.

So as you can see I am making progress. It is a render of thishttp://www.staffordshirehoard.org.uk/staritems/petctoral-cross

I know I need to do a lot more work on the gemstone. Until now I have been focusing mainly on the gold. But, let me know what you think. The render is going to be a reconstruction of how it would have looked on a member of the clergy. Right now I am just trying to get the materials working well.

You're missing a bit? No?

No, that is just the bent left arm. They want me to show it as it would have been worn.

are you using mental ray or light tracer ? isn't light tracer slow as hell ?
Material looks good to my naive eyes, maybe a little bit more shiny?

Mental Ray materials with interpolated reflections using the envir blur shader. The main gold diffuse is photoshop material, there is a gloss map, bump/normal in an arch and design. The coil is arch and design with a falloff map in the diffuse.

The gem-stone in the middle looks as though it is protruding a bit too much (compared with the photograph reference). I'd also say it was a bit more 'glassier' and definitely a shade or two further on the red side of things.

Also, the gold material needs more variation to it. The reference has almost orange-like shades, whereas yours is too golden/yellowish.

Final crit would be the rivets around the edges are far too uniform - look almost machine-produced.

Looks pretty close though.

Yeah. Ill get on those rivets and play with the gem a bit more, your right it prob needs some more translucency. The gem's a difficult one because any other angle but straight on it looks more black than red. Ill try to find another picture. It only seems to be that one image where it truly looks red.

Golds a bit tricky also. They want it to look more clean, as it was when it was being worn, so it wouldn't have as much of the tarnish.

Yeah as soon as I saw the 'gem' I instantly thought 'fruit gums' not gem stone

the black ones in particular :)

Update. Spent a few more days working on the textures, the lighting and some other pieces. Added some tiny bits of dust on the surface in Photoshop and also did some colour correction and balancing in post. I think this is almost done.

That's looking nice man. Gold mat looks good. I don't know if Mental ray has a material fog option like vray but I'd look into that for the gem material and maybe couple that with some slightly blurred refraction. Giving me a little bit of a jelly vibe at the moment for some reason, maybe a little bump for scratches and stuff.

Yeah, goddamn jelly gem. It has been a ballache. I think it is slightly too reflective too. It is something I want to go back to. I will look into the fog option/refraction and bump. Cheers :D

The rope looks almost cartoony/cell shaded to me... Anyone else get that?

Hey Coxy can I ask your technique for making those ribbed inset curls? Do you you make the original ribbed cylinder and then just curve it to a spline?

Looks good.

They are simply renderable circles that are arrayed along another renderable spline using the spacing tool. I kept a single circle from each section floating above each wire to act as a controller for size/detail etc.
