New PC build recomendations

Hey, I know there are always a lot of these threads going around here but I know there are a lot of hardware savvy people here and it would be great to get your opinions.

I have had my current rig for over 4 years new maybe 5, and it is still going very strong, but I cant help but think it is time for an upgrade.

I have been tossing up between overclocking my current q6600 and simply upgrading my system or simply building a whole new system and keeping the old one as an entertainment system to connect to the TV.

My current system:

q6600 2.4ghz can OC to 3.4ghz
4gb 1066mhz corsair dominators
450w power supply
Nvidia 8800 512mb
gigabyte 775 mobo

Here is what I was considering for a new system build:

CPU - Intel Core i7 970 3.20GHz 12MB Cache CPU (looking to OC to around 4ghz down the line)
RAM - Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
Power - Antec ATX TruePower 750W
Case - Thermaltake LEVEL 10 Extreme Gaming Station Case
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R X58+ICH10R QPI 6.4GT/s DDR3 2000 PCI-Ex16 SATAII
GFX - Leadtek GTX570 1280M PCI E
Cooling - Noctua NH-C14 CPU Cooler
SDD - OCZ Agility 3 60G SATA3 SSD

All up for parts it will cost $2582 and I will have to build it myself, of course around $900 is taken up by the case here is a link to a review of it, I remember when I first saw it posed here ages ago :)

I would love any suggestion for alternate parts or anything :)
Thanks in advance

nono! no!

x58 chipset, its socket and its cpus are just about done. Intel will be rolling out lga 2011 in 3 months or so, if you get that system you wont find any worthwhile upgrades for it in the coming years. On the intel side of things you can wait for their new workstation platform or go with their mainstream socket 1155 which is quite fresh and along with sandy bridge cpus more cost effective (alltho for stuff like max rendering the hexa cores on x58 systems are still faster if you got the money to shell out). Alternatively amd is supposedly launching their new cpus in 2 months or so which are according to them capable of challenging intels high end offerings but its a brand new architecture and has been delayed a few times already so it looks like they are having some issues on delivering that promise..

Other then that memory is cheap, why not fill up all your slots?

Saw this yesterday it`s a watercooled i7 2600k @ 5ghz, ram is a bit limited but could easily build a similar system -

Not sure how the prices compare where u are.

My four year old laptop with a broken screen, malfunctioning keyboard, three gigs of ram and on-board graphics laughs at you all.

(actually, that's the sound of me crying).

I'd easily wait another month or so for an 8 core AMD Bulldozer, oc it to 4ghz...

PS. what's up with that ugly ass case?

[EDIT] I'd spend over a hundred bucks in a standard 4U server case, and put the other 800 towards Video, RAM or CPU instead. unless your case usually doesn't sit under your desk and you want to show off the case, which IMHO looks like massive pieces of crap stuck together.

Thanks for the info guys, really got me thinking and definitely leaning towards the 1155 and 2600k if I was to build something now or maybe only buying certain parts and integrating them into my current system till the new chip sets come out.
If I wait and they bring out 2011 that could be the better option but it isn't really going to be cheaper and there aren't any concrete dates as to when it will get released. As far as Bulldozer goes, who knows what will happen there.

@AS, those are some pimping cases =D

@albongino, ugly case? seriously? Each to their own I guess but as far as I remember, when it first got announced there were quite a few people here drooling over it. Pretty sure bolts swore he was going to get one. Personally I think the design is stunning and it has won design awards so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks so. They just released a new version, which is a lot cheaper, and that really does look like junk =P

the box is under your desk. who cares what it looks like ?

spend the money on a graphics card upgrade instead.

Hiya BB, it's funny, but a case like that may become a collectors item in years to come. I say if ya love it and its a financial possibility, go for it :)

On a more helpfull note, I've got a few i7 2600's at work and they are lovely.

Thanks Mashedpot8er :)

@AS, obviously I don't plan on the case being hidden under my desk =P

Anyway, how does this sound for revised specs?

CPU - Intel Core i7 2600K (looking to OC to around 4ghz down the line)
RAM - Corsair 12GB (3x 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz vengence
Power - Antec ATX TruePower 750W
Case - Thermaltake LEVEL 10 Extreme Gaming Station Case
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 Motherboard
GFX - gigabyte GTX570 1280M PCI-E
Cooling - Noctua NH-C14 CPU Cooler

Now if I ditched the case I could upgrade to a GTX580 and get a SSD, but frankly I rather the case. On the other hand maybe I should simply wait till 2011 comes out but I don't know if I will.

Let me know what you think
Thanks in advance
