Alternatively, Photoshop CS4 and 5 supports 3D model painting. You can open a 3d model (obj, 3ds, etc.) in Photoshop and paint directly on the model with your usual selection of brushes. Rotating the model is a bit finicky, but otherwise painting is pretty natural. You can then save the texture back out of Photoshop for use in Max. It's pretty useful for touching up seams or painting on scratched bits on metal edges.

obsiidian: the 3d support is only available in the extended editions of cs5
