Overheating Problems..
show user profile  ScotlandDave
I`ve posted this over at the Asus ROG forums but will post it here too in case any of our resident hardware guru`s have any insight into what is going on here. Here goes:

My specs are as follows:

Motherboard: P9X79 Pro
CPU: i7 3930K ( Hexcore )
Cooler: Corsair H100
Case: Corsair Obsidian 650D
CPU: Corsair TX650
RAM: 32GB GSkill RipjawsZ ( 8 dimms )

So, several months back when i built this system, i used the AutoTuning tool in AI Suite II to overclock it to around 4.6Ghz which has worked great. I never stress-tested it with prime or anything but i do 3D rendering regularly and always got good temps at Idle and under load..

Until recently, when i`ve noticed really high Idle temps - around 40 C sometimes 50 C at startup. Then when rendering ( ie under load ) it`s going way too high ie 70-80 C and have seen higher at moments..

So today i thought OK i`ll try and reseat the H100. The H100 came with pre-applied thermal paste when i installed it originally so i took that off, smeared ( as neatly as possible ) some Arctic MX-4 on it and re-seated it. But still the same..

Pump on the H100 seems to be working fine ( you can sortof feel the water flowing through the pipes if you hold them ) and isn`t making any different noises or anything..

I`ve also had a couple of +5V Too High or Abnormal warnings from AI Suite which is wierd. Here`s the Alert Log just from the past couple of days from the AI Suite tool Probe II:

[05/23/2013 at 10:09 am] CPU 80.0 Abnormal
[05/23/2013 at 10:10 am] CPU 63.0 Normal
[05/23/2013 at 12:42 pm] CPU fan OPT 65286 Normal
[05/23/2013 at 02:54 pm] MotherBoard -60.0 Abnormal
[05/23/2013 at 03:14 pm] MotherBoard 28.0 Normal
[05/23/2013 at 03:34 pm] CPU fan OPT 1700 Normal
[05/23/2013 at 03:41 pm] MotherBoard -92.0 Abnormal
[05/23/2013 at 03:41 pm] MotherBoard 26.0 Normal
[05/23/2013 at 08:05 pm] CPU -50.0 Abnormal
[05/23/2013 at 08:05 pm] CPU 55.0 Normal
[05/23/2013 at 08:28 pm] CPU fan 2017 Normal
[05/23/2013 at 08:49 pm] CPU -121.0 Abnormal
[05/23/2013 at 08:49 pm] CPU 57.0 Normal
[05/24/2013 at 11:51 am] +5V 10.200 Abnormal
[05/24/2013 at 11:51 am] +5V 5.040 Normal
[05/24/2013 at 01:16 pm] Vcore 0.016 Abnormal
[05/24/2013 at 01:16 pm] Vcore 1.312 Normal

The CPU 80.0 Abnormal would have been when rendering, but you can see there`s a couple of negative values for CPU and Motherboard..

I`m at a loss. I think it may be the motherboard. It`s never recognised the full 32Gb only recognises 24Gb of it. I said that to Asus support and they said it could be the CPU, so i`d have to send the board back for testing but i never bothered.. But now i don`t know - is it the motherboard, cpu or the cooler, or what??

Thanks for any advice.

[edit] Also tried updating BIOS from the original to the latest including the conversion from ROM to CAP. No difference. I thought at least that might fix the memory not all showing up :|

Ah the joys of a self build. I know this pain all too well. :)

Is the heat sink clean from dust? Those Corsair coolers have a pretty tight wafer type thing that I imagine gets clogged fairly quickly.

Yeah i`ve recently taken out the radiator and hoovered the core along with the fans etc. The case is actually the 650D i got that wrong in the above ( fixed ), and that allows you to take out the filter from below the power supply to clean it, one from the front of the case to clean it, etc.. So everything good there..

I have the corsair H80I. Have you installed the software that comes with your corsair H100?
I think it's called corsair link (if I'm not mistaken).
You can see the speed your fans are turning and the temps of your CPU,GPU and pump.
Maybe through there you can see when your problem comes from.
I also use this software to set up my fans speed as I like (usually on quiet mode, except when rendering). My guess is a problem with the H100.

If you can't find anything I would go to the corsair website or forum for additional help.

Good luck,

Thanks Joel. I don`t remember getting any software with the H100, might look that up..

However, i`ve just came back to the PC and got a Motherboard temp warning:

Would that not indicate a motherboard or cpu problem rather than cooler?? There`s no heat coming off the heatsinks on the mobo i can only assume that 123.0 degrees C is bullshit..

Well, I'm no expert but that might indicate some sort of problem.
When u open your case do u feel a lot of heat?
Do you have maybe filters on your case that you can take out and Clemente? Or maybe just have a look there that the airways are open and not clogged

As i said a couple of posts up mate i`ve done all that, and there`s no excess heat on heatsinks on the motherboard. Restarting the PC got rid of the high mobo temp and i have a feeling that it was artificial..

Someone on the Asus forum is suggesting that AI Suite doesn`t play ball with other monitoring apps ( i installed HWMonitor and CoreTemp yesterday ) but i dunno, the cpu temp probs started before i installed those ( that`s why i installed them, to verify what AI Suite was saying )..

50 idle 80 load is fairly normal for that cpu with h100 on low setting.. not much else to say.

I think it's pretty hot.
I have the H80i, which is a lot smaller than the 100 and I'm getting 32 idle and around 62-65 when rendering

50 idle 80 load is fairly normal for that cpu with h100 on low setting..

Not when i`ve been getting low 20`s idle and below 60 rendering since i built the system about a year ago it`s not.. This problem has happened only very recently.

I`ve had to step back the overclock as it won`t go to the 4.6 odds i had it at before using the AutoTune it`ll only now go to about 4.2ghz and even then i`m getting these 80 degree C temps at rendering. Didn`t get anywhere near those temps previously at almost 4.7 and it`s a six core chip.

I`m starting to think maybe it is the cooler after all. I`ve always kept it on the mid setting, never touched the button on it to put it on full whack. Tried that yesterday and it got a lot faster/louder but made very little difference to temps..

well a few things that can make up the difference a) its nearly june, we're getting 30C ambient temps b) you're using autotune which is a giant no-no, that thing always sets the voltage way too high, i dont know what it set it to a year ago but it might have damaged your chip by now or changed its settings

a) tested in the morning, ambient temps wayy below 20C - still high idle temps
b) vcore has never went above 1.4, auto tune-up might not be optimal but it`s been fine as i said for months..

But i will add.. you might be right Stabby. What else could it be but the CPU? There`s a guy on the ROG forum i`m posting on getting very similar problems with a similar setup, he`s swapped the cooler over and same problem.. Couldn`t really be the motherboard at this point could it? Dodgy sensors? Like i said i`ve never been able to run full 32Gb ram it`s only ever seen 24Gb which made me think mobo.. Then more recently i`ve had usb dropping out which again i`m thinking mobo. But possibly just a bad/degrading cpu??

Just not sure, don`t like spending money on things that fail. So if it`s the cpu can i RMA it, and in that case what if it turns out to be the motherboard.. Just odd how it`s worked so well for so long and now all of a sudden fail..

Vexed and frustrated :|

Reminds me of the light bulb in the kitchen.

the reason i said it was fairly normal is because i have almost the same setup (3930k, h100 and p9x79). The cooler is on low and i run 4.9ghz @ 1.4v with 50 idle/80 load at around 20 ambient. Voltage monitoring software isnt very accurate at determining the voltage with LLC going berserk (which is often the case with auto tuners) so it might be higher than you think. On the other hand, i checked my probe log and dont have those funked up sensor alerts, if anything is broken then its probably the motherboard.

4.9ghz on a 3930k bluddy ell mate. How often do you run it at load is the chip safe to sit at 80C for any length of time?
