"I have decided to stop the development of the Outliner. There are basically two major reasons for this decision:

1. I don't want to have to compete with Autodesk
The Scene Explorer got a bit of an overhaul in 3dsMax 2015, with some of its new features being based on the Outliner. Even though Autodesk may not have the best reputation in continued development of new tools, it does seem likely to me that more features will be added in the future. If they do, it would make the Outliner less useful over time. And I'm not going to develop new features just to have Autodesk "copy" them, however flattering that may be.

2. 3dsMax is not a good platform for developers
Developing tools with maxscript is not too bad, but the C++ SDK is a different story. It's poorly documented and without any support, it's pretty hard to work with. The C# wrapper for the SDK makes it worse by being incomplete and convoluted. Some things you would really want to be able to do are plain impossible (catching errors in a generic way for example).
So it's simply not fun developing plugins for 3dsMax. And the fact that I would have to pay for a full license just to develop the Outliner doesn't help either.

I've made the source code for the Outliner 3.0 as it is today available under the MIT open source license on GitHub: https://github.com/Pjanssen/Outliner-3.0 So it's free for everyone to continue developing it. I would be happy to provide some support there.

Did they copy outliner from the max script or maya?

Also FYI xsi's explorer is the best thing ever and neither come anywhere near unfortunately... I hope for all our sakes that they develop the 'outliner' in max/maya like the xsi one

It gets worse, even if someone was to take the source and develop.....

Q: Does this work happily on 2015?
A: No, the 2015 SDK has breaking changes (nested layers being one of them).

Fixed by 2016?....lol.

The Alpha 3 is pretty stable for me in 2014, I so hope someone takes the source and develops.

Okay, thanks for the link. Looks useful, though I wouldn't want it permanently open on my laptop screen, would take up too much screen space.

np dude, actually the Alpha 3 is missing a few features I'm used to, I don't have time to figure it out right now, it is in a pretty unfinished state.

Yeah I don't have it open all the time, toggleable, Aplha 3 is instantaneous, 2 is slightly more sluggish.

Well supposedly they are developing some core Maya stuff that has been neglected for years (like render layers that randomly break)

And 'they' being the old xsi developers <3

pretty sure the outliner script copied the outliner in maya... which has been around for 20 years almost.


someone correct me if i'm wrong but this is like complaining about apple adding a pano feature to their camera and the apps becoming irrelevant.
