Opening Maya .mb file in MAX?
show user profile  Dr. Jim
Ummmm..yeah.

Client gave me a bunch of .mb files.
These ofcourse won't open in MAX.

What are my options? What should I tell them? In the old days I would suggest OBJ's or 3DS files...
Is there some new, better way these days to try and get Maya models (ideally WITH textures..etc) into MAX? Not concerned with animation data as they are not animated.....etc.

heelp!

edit: I tried the Search.....and it worked.

So at BEST this is prolly gonna be some assf*ck of a mess right? Maybe FBX....maybe the model wont be all jacked up.....maybe materials...........ugh.

Just rename the files as .max and they will open just fine.

if it's easier, download the free trial and save as obj. it will also give you the ability to test what file save options would work best for you. then you know exactly what to specify to clients in the future.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

[edit] I've tried a few converting programs but they're all shit. Downloading trial... argh.

Dub's got it. You can do this with all files. I like going on facebook and stalking people, saving pictures and changing .jpg to .max and wow! it just opens up in full 3d and you can walk around like you were actually there when the photo was taken.

3d artists hate me for this one little trick.

you won't believe it.

I know the last part is Monty Python mode but is the first part sarcastic or not? I'd really like to know now, after wasting about 5 or 6 hours installing/error/installing/error/installing...

No, you cannot change the file extension to make it work in another piece of software.

you're just having issues installing Maya though, right? I mean that's a different problem entirely.

MB is maya's binary file. The trial version of Maya SHOULD let you export, I don't think it's limited in any way other than 30 days of use.

I would try exporting as .fbx first, that is usually better than .obj. You may need to change some of the settings in the FBX exporter, like maybe set it back to the 2009 FBX export settings, or whatever.

Using the trial version will obviously not be a long term solution, you may have to just have to shell out for a license of maya if this is something you have to deal with alot.

@ NPCPHThank you, Krause already helped me get it sorted.

@ Error, it wasn't that Maya wouldn't open, it's that Maya wouldn't download, it kept on failing, saying it's missing a file. And the LT version just halted when it was about 50% done, then would come up with a "Connection Lost" error or something like that.
