Opacity maps and shadows

Hi there
Just a question regarding shadows. I have a 2d tree image with an alpha channel that im using as an opacity map. Not sure if this is what its meant for but the purpose is to apply it to a place so that I can then cast real shadows (not those from a fake 3d tree) onto a building. The problem im getting is I cant seem to soften the edges of the shadows. Im using a MR sun and sky setup. Some pointers would be great.
