| Ocean Waves |

Well, I have the project. Now I need some solutions. This is just one of the questions I will be asking here over the next few weeks. I will be animating an oil rig bouncing around in a hurricane. How do you guys suggest I create the waves? I need to be able to make them to scale, and they need to render quickly.
Suggestions?

loads of other interesting solutions linked via that one on yt.
if you need an accurate sim of the effect of the waves on the platform, realflow's probably your best bet.

I spent months (many years ago) wrigint a maxscript using Gerstner waves to generate sea surface with different mesh density based on camera position.
Then my bag got stolen with the memory stick with it all on and my HDD died.
I never finished it, but Maxscript is too slow anyway, it took a very long time to execute.

I did some work on real-time view dependent displacement mapping a few years ago.
will probably look at that again some time.
the problem with that is sometimes surfaces are seen via reflections, so in order to calculate required levels of tesselation, there's more to consider than just the camera position/orientation.
in the end the general solution (nothing view dependent) is probably the way to go.
or curved surface representation with a raytracer that can cast directly into that.
lots of fun r&d. not enough hours in the day.
source is available (c++/gpl2) for anyone who feels like taking it further.
anyone checked out hot yet ? any good ?

I`d love to check out the Houdini Ocean Toolkit those Tessendorf waves are like nothing you can fake with any type of noise ( cinema4d has lots of noise types still not good enough ). If there was a port for C4D i`d be a happy chappy..
GOT SICK OF OLD SIG HAVE AT THIS NEW ONE

he is but not looking for the work (too busy) & don't know the c4d sdk yet.
you might be able to find someone at a uni who'd port it for free.

Does anyone know if Dreamscape would work? I would like to get a demo to try it (Watermarks are fine) and buy it if it ends up working.
I downloaded the Houdini Ocean Toolkit above and I couldn't get it to look even remotely like the picture. I also don't think it is capable of large ocean swells.

I was wondering about dreamscape also... wouldn't hurt to try. wouldn't realflow be better for what your end product is? **if you're looking at $600 + programs

Realflow seems to use a lot more CPU and the render times, I have heard, are enormous. Not to mention the steeper learning curve for Realflow compared to Dreamscape. I dabbled with both five or six years ago and Dreamscape at least was understandable. Realflow just baffled me.

in the zip archive (get correct one for the version of max you're using) is a file called readme.txt
read it.
[extract]
Installation
Copy libfftw3f-3.dll to your 3ds Max root directory Copy hotOcean_Max_20XX.dlm to your 3dsmax\plugins directory
Usage
Apply the Houdini_Ocean modifier to any mesh object. For best result use a plane object with over 100 height and width segments. The following properties are avialable,
Resolution Size Wind speed Wave height Shortest wave Choppiness Wind direction Damp Reflection Wind Align Ocean depth Time Seed
[/extract]
copy either the 32 or 64 bit files in the archive depending on which version of max you're using.

Hi AS I have done the above, but when i open max im not sure where to find it? i cant seem to see in the modifier panel?
Im using 3ds max 2012 64bit
I put the first file int the my 3ds max 2012 folder on my C: drive (which i am assuming is the root) and the other into the plugins folder within the root
do i have to load it from inside max at all?
