Making an object appear out of thin air in an animation
show user profile  jceronio@gmail.com
Working on an animation right now where I have a box unfolding onto itself, with new sides unfolding out of the older sides, the only problem is that when I create a new side, it decides it wants to become part of the original scene, and finds itself in the first frame just hovering about.

The only way I've found to remedy this is to make is to make a Blend Material with no opacity and have it blend to the other material at the right key frame, but this still isn't what I'm looking for...

Well if you are using scanline you can use the visibility spinner the right click-->object properties window, or add a visibility track to the curve editor (track-->visibility-->add) but these methods are not supported in mental ray, so you either have to animate the material's opacity (like you have done) or move it out of view, them back into view within one frame

put it off screen, by like 5000 screen's widths, then in the frame u want it there have it there, and the frame before have it like 5000 screens away. it'll still move in, but if it's far enough, the speed is high enough that you can't see movement at the frame rate.

lol, parker, well done for repeating what I said ;) but if its over one frame it could be half a millimetre outside the screen and you wouldn't see it when it moves in. One frame its out of view, the next frame its in position. there's nothing in between to show up the movement. The only way it would show up is if there was motion blur in the scene, but then you just wouldnt apply it to that object

ya, but i have problems with like rendering at double frame rates.... i'm not sure why i do it lol..... maybe just my imagination makes it seem like it's moving or something. =P

and i saw the confusing opacity and materials words and assumed that was your whole answer.
