3d Object Rendered part of Alpha is not rendered.

I noticed a strange 3dmax behavior in 3dmax2013. There are a lot of 3d objects in the scene and we are rendering a lot of animated footages using Mental render.
The problem is that one object did render in color. But its alpha channel is not rendered. We rendered the whole scene and wasted time only to realize that the problem was not with the rendering. It came from the mesh of the 3dmodel. STL revealed that it had open edges.
Luckily, We did find a way to hide that object in final video footages.

But I am not sure why the colors are getting rendered but alpha is not.

Check the mapping. Convert to editable poly. Alpha must be in the opacity slot. You cannot use psd or png files with embedded transparency. Check also that(in the opacity slot) mono channel Output is set to alpha and alpha Source is set to image Alpha.

I checked its mapping and textures, its having a standard multi material with no testure. On replacing the material in the multi material slot.. it showed alpha now.

b) For testing I removed the added material again from the multi material it renders with alpha with the base materal of the multi material.

Basically when i added the multi material it should have worked like b at the first place.
