Object deforms another

Hi All,
I'm trying to create a simple animation but really stuggling to figure out the best way to do it...
I want to have a simple plane (which will represent a cell wall) and a sphere (which will represent a virus or such like) I want the sphear to move down to the plane and then deform into the plane as it comes into contact with it. Is there a really simple deformation I can use on the sphere to influence the plane when it come in contact? I just cant seem to find anything that will work? I'm sure ive done similar in the distant past but having a mental blockage.
Any help always appreciated!
Cheers,
Steve

You can use a displace spacewarp, or the modifier, or volume select combined with a push or spherify modifier..lots of options
