OBJ Sequence and Particle Flow

I have used a script to import a sequence of OBJ meshes into MAX, that turns them into a faux-animated mesh.

I have then added in a Particle system and used a "Position Object" operator to "stick" the particles to the mesh. I selected "Lock on Emitter" and "Animated Shape"

Whilst the particle seem to be sticking to the mesh and moving with it, it looks like particles are disappearing, each frame, from the top of the mesh downwards.

In the link, you can see the first 3 frames, where the particles are starting to "drop off" after frame 0, in the head area.

EDIT - this is the obj loader script -http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/objloader-v1-4
it loads them into a bespoke object, with each mesh taking up 1 frame

EDIT - Oddly, this doesn't happen if I set the location of the particles to "surface". the issue was when they were set to "vertex"
