I am a huge Nuke fan but just can't quite wrap my head around how this could be useful at all.

I guess it's because I've always been disappointed with the limitations of the vray frame buffer, even compared to say shooting tethered with something like aperture. This could completely replace the frame buffer and allow you to composite and colour correct as you go. Great if your client is looking over your shoulder as you work.
