Nuclear Attack
show user profile  Krogoth
For one of the classes I'm in, I have to illustrate a magazine article. I chose an article talking about what to do if there was a nuclear attack nearby. So, I decided for the cover of the article, I would have a city getting nuked with a tilted population sign in the front.

This is still a work in progress. I'm still trying to get the colors right on the explosions; I used FumeFX for them, which I have only used once before for clouds. I plan on putting some smoke in the city, some grass near the sign, and a street to go by the sign as well.

I also plan on modeling and texturing a geiger counter to be used as an image in the article. We can only use stuff that we make.

This is due in 8 days so I still have time to mess with it. Thoughts and comments are appreciated, so are tips.

The population sign should probably have all the numbers except for 0 blown off. Scorch marks around the edges, fiercer explosion in the background so the city is essentially that of a crumbling silhouette.

Also... "what to do if there's a nuclear attack nearby?"... Die, die horribly.

"I flew over Egypt once"

The main thing i want to advice you is measuring.
Find tool named Tape. Put mm (or what you are used to) in the System units.
And fix your scales according to real life sizes.

The city looks like a bunch of boxes. This building generator may come in handy (never used it myself though):

Thanks for the input.

I'm going to add the scorch marks on the sign later in photoshop.

I need to look up the dimensions on an atomic bomb's mushroom could, and then I'll resize the city. I don't want too much detail on the city, more like a silhouette.

I added some smoke to the city, may need some more.

I'm going to switch gears for a bit and model the geiger counter.

What kind of look are you going for?
Is it really stylized and flat and such?......Like some sort of funky design style?

Or are you trying to go more 'real'? <- If thats the case,...then I think you got a long way to go.... ;-)

mushroom cloud(s)?...Why 3? Don't think a nuke strike would send multiple warheads to only cover about 8 blocks.....

Good core concept though!

I'm not sure what style I'm going for. A real look would be a lot of work for an assignment that doesn't really need it.

I started working on the geiger counter.

This is what I'm basing it on:

I could really use some pointers on how to model the knob. Right now it's just two shapes because I have no idea how to model it as one shape. This is going to be used for a close up shot.

Just finished the geiger counter.

I did some research into the size of mushroom clouds and it looks like the height of a mushroom cloud is about 888 ft per kiloton. If I say that my tallest building is 800 ft, then the mushroom cloud would be from a 4 kt nuke, which would have a radius of about 1/3 mile. So, I need to check and see if the cloud has a radius of 1.5 city blocks.
