Notes from today's Max (XBR) delevopment seminar.
show user profile  Nik Clark
Here are a few notes from today's Autodesk XBR seminar. I was lucky enough to get quite a few answers to my questions. Here's a summary of what's in development for future versions of Max. Nothing has been promised, this is what is being actively researched.

A lot of this comes from the Q&A session in the Chat, not from the actual presentations in the seminar.

The future looks great. I just hope it doesn't turn into Microsoft Office. I'll add images from the presentations when I can get round to it.

---------------------------------------

Fully customizable viewport

Something "like" rayfire.

ICE integration

Something "like" realflow.

OpenCL will be used for some things

OSX development, but not Linux beyond render slaves.

GPU-based viewport

Indirect lighting in viewport

Real-time viewport materials

Render straight to AE

New caddies are being worked on, as current ones suck.

Real-time iRay and DX 11 soon.

New scene management

10x faster viewports

No 64bit QT, but being addressed.

ephere.Zookeeper integration

Portable UI settings

iPod as external monitor!?

Retiring legacy features

No immediate stereoscopic control

PF multithreading

New viewport dynamics. Everything in dynamics is live in viewports, also for modelling with (pulling table cloth, sheets, etc).

Scanline development has ended. (Quicksilver now)

New containers

PhysX to replace Reactor

New modelling tools (something like Sketchup?)

One click Max <-> Mudbox

SDS modelling tools

Catmull-Clark Subdivision

iRay render elements

New Xref system

New UVW editor in next release

New methods of going from Max-Maya-XSI

Are they Q's or A's then?

ICE is what you want ;) and thus PF flow is redundant.

Something like realflow - probably lagoa in ICE? rather slow though.

Looking forward to Catmull-Clark Subdivision. Anyone had a play with this in other software?

Ha ha, these were answers to questions. Lots of things they said no to, but I didn't make notes of that.

I would love to try ICE.

Just in TopMod, but that doesn't really count.

I was there. I most liked the viewport ideas. Especially materials, they looked a little like C4D.
THough I think those were just rough drawings?

Yup, they are just concept sketches for making decisions before coding starts.

Hope the xrefs are fixed in 2012. Hopefully others can remind Autodesk they are broken in the later webcasts.

This key feature has been horribly broken for a very long time. It'll only be fixed if enough users say they need it fixing.

Right now, I have to plan on migrating to other packages because 3dsmax doesn't meet our requirements.

Fancy next-gen stuff should be done after the basics are solid.

plz fix teh xrefs.

Autodesk are not omnipotent so you'll have to drop by the webinar and inform them of your requirements.

XBR (2012) beta : http://beta.autodesk.com

As with all software, constructive feedback helps ensure you get the functionality you require.

Does anyone want to have to create .maxc files to link scenes together ?

Cool list Nik! :D

I'm attending the webinar myself later tonight - very exiting :) It's at 23.00 o'clock here in Sweden so it's going to be a late night :) But I've been looking forward to it! :)

Zookeeper - cool! :) But isn't both Zookeeper a ICE a bit redundant?

Very cool with a integrated "rayfire" tool, just what Max needs. Hope they integrate Afterburn and FumeFX as well sooner or later! :D Then Max is like the ultimate VFX tool! :D hehe

Portable UI settings! Yeay, I've spent like 4 hour at work today with my new installation of Max 2011 tweaking shortcuts and quad menus, adding tool bars and fixing icons.

Does anyone know anything about Max 2012? Any dates, sneak-peaks or something out there? :)

Cheers mates and happy Maxing! :D

Already have it installed. Get on the beta & try it yourself if they'll approve you.
