New website - stfoto.nl
show user profile  StevegeK
Hey guys,

Photography has been a big hobby of mine. For a couple of years, stfoto.nl has been my photo-blog.

Changes
At work I've had two "one year"-contracts, but last Tuesday my manager told me I'd get a new contract. This time, a regular contract. Hurray! The contract states I will be working 4 days a week. Nice.

And now?
This means I could do film/photo work for one-two days a week. And I'm going for that!

The -new- website
I've decided my website should go from a blog, to a website with a homepage, product-pages, general information and my blog. I think my blog is a very important part of my website since people will come back for new posts and they will see my progress. It tells the story behind the photographer.

It's far from finished but the basic website is here.

Notes
- The colors are based on my of my fav. photo's, also in the header.
- Textst are temp, more will come later.
- All video-pages still have to be made.
- Service, lot's of pages to be made.
- All pages still have to get a carrousel, except for the skateboarding page. This will show "examples of this line of work".

Comments very welcome!! :-)

Just some observations/critiques:

1: Blue/Orange is played out like lens flares and chrome balls on checkered floors.
2: Your blue was a little too flat, it's all one color, get some lighting/shadows/etc in there somewhere.
3: The logo looks like it's half finished. I could see using that as a flat-mark in like an email signature or on letter-head, but on a website it just doesn't look finished. Maybe go for a metal texture like in your favorite picture?
4: Nowhere on your site is STFOTO defined as to what it is supposed to mean. Since it can't be said as a word, it would be far more memorable if people knew what it stood for.
5: Typography: study up on it. Your letter-spacing is way too much on your copy text and is so much in your name in the header that it makes your name almost impossible to read, which is what you want people to remember the most.
6: Sea-Foam green and blue are extremely difficult to read on black. Blue is the most strenuous color for the eye to see anyways, and by having so much of it directly on black, your website makes the user kind of want to look away.
7: Make sure your capitalization is consistent (especially in your header).
8: A tag-line, you need one.
9: Your logo draws peoples attention up and to the photo (because of the swoosh), which is fine, just make sure there is something to draw them back down into nav/body section.
10: Your favorite photo is just kind of plopped in there. Since it's the basis for the color scheme on your site, try making it take up the entire background of your header with a feather/fade on the edges. Even turn down the opacity some if you cant get enough contrast on the lettering and your logo in front. Blurred bits of black behind elements will blend with the background photo and also help those elements stand out.
11: Structure, your site has none. It's just one big wide column. Those are extremely difficult for people to read and can make visitors hesitant to get into the text.
12: Gradients (like in your nav): just using a plain gradient like this says "Well at least it isn't a solid color, right?"
13: Graphical Shinies: Your website needs them.
14: Your RSS link would be much better placed in the header somewhere.
15: Social links, facebook-twitter-etc, include them. Use icons if need be.

You have everything showing up, but I'd say this website is about half-way finished.

Keep at it :)

Stephen R.: You've just earned yourself a lot of interwebs. I'll be transfering them to your account shortly.

Thanks, going to work on these points, very very valuable !!!

This greatly pains me.......BUT,......dude: You are uber uber talented,....and this site looks kinda cheap.
The design,....the tons of info....etc..etc. I't might be a cultural thing?.....but this feels very low end cheap....about 200% the opposite of how good your work is.

I wouldnt know where to begin as far as telling you what to fix....I would prolly start over :-(
There are a lot of very nice WP themes out there, that are customizable and can be made into very good sites. I might explore that unless you are a great coder (are you? I dont know).

Maybe not so much verbage?.....It's really all about the work.

All my opinion,.....hated to say it......but must!

U sure? I'm quite satisfied with it overall. I don't want it to be artistic or anything, just my services with samples of my work. Often photography websites (of people who offer their services) lack verybasic information. So that's why I want to focus more on the practical stuff.

Once I've got everything figured out I want to add clear prices, packages etcetc. Photo/video a la carte....

I'm with Jim I'm afraid. Getting a bit of a Geocities vibe from it. Way too much text also, I click the architecture section expecting to see pictures and get loads of text. Let your images do the talking, get everything else on the about/contact sections.

Check this guys website.

Yeah I know these websites. Awesome photo's and you have to contact them to get a price. On average it takes a couple of days before you have a price.

Thing is, I'm aiming at smaller customers. Customers who are not gonna spend 1000's of euro's on photo's. Customers who want to know what they are getting.

EVERY page will get photo's, I hope to have that achieved in about 2 weeks. So don't worry about that. It will be photo's, and the text telling the potention customer what he/she can expect.

About the look and feel: I really like these colors so I first want to try to optimize this as much as I want. I like black because it makes looking at photo's easier.

So yes it's a different approach but one I thought about.

Stephen, you are into photography, why not take a look at some nice photo sites and do some similar and cleaner stuff?

One that attracts me a lot, based on it's simplicity and clean design is this one:http://www.joeyl.com/

Check more sites, might give you a better idea of an approach.

Cheers,

Stephen: That is awesome. I took some of the suggestions into my design, gotta tweak it tonight gotto head off to a 8h long meeting now.

Either way I'll strongly consider all my options. Thanks all for the feedback.

Note: I don't want to look like an artist, this website will be a bit more commercially.
