took me quite a while to load (almost 30 seconds with my 20mbps connection)
I would recommend you to place a loading screen, noone likes to stare at a blank screen.
also, I believe the about animation is glitchy ? the photo bounces up and down.

(It might be your host fault though )

Hello there

beautiful ;3

Well, I was curious how long it would take. I've got a pretty good connection and it took roughly 1:30mins to load up.

Crits (disclaimer: I'm not a web designer, just a noob checking out a webpage):

When I move my mouse to "about" it flashes a picture of you popping in and out. Not sure if this is an error or not. If it isn't an error, I would make it static like your other icons.

Your portfolio link is underwhelming. Not your work, but your presentation of your work. It actually took me a few seconds to see that you had any work to show. Present your sites as a slideshow; show more than just the banner; make them hyperlinks. Basically, sell yourself.

Your CV could be a lot smaller text and less spaced out. Try to get the information all into one page so you don't have to scroll. There's nothing I hate more than scrolling.

Are you running your webserver from a pen drive?

Took a while to load mate, but looks tidy enough. I could not find where to view your work though?

Hmmm, cant seem to figure out what's making the about link act like that.

Maybe it's time for a new host if the speeds are that bad. Maybe it's because you're in another country? It loads in about 20 seconds for me.

Perhaps a load screen is a good idea.

*edit* fixed the problem with the about hover */edit*

/like

loads fast for me & we're still using the old smoke signal protocol over here.

you need to expand your portfolio section.

get permission from previous clients to link direct to their sites rather than just pics.

like you say, it's all about the interactive experience.

demonstrating ability - which your new site does anyway to some extent sells you way better than words & pics.

resume is fine. wouldn't expect it on one page. layout is fine.

basically - what you have is solid, so time to think about what you could add.

examples - add the option to purchase a stephen rios mug from your site. not particularly because anyone wants one, but to show you know how to configure an e-commerce site. integrated forum perhaps. etc. etc.

re-implement the globle in webgl where available. then users can spin it for fun. just a nice ui toy to start with, then extend later.

if that's webgl - hard to tell without looking at the code, then get it interactive.
let me spin it !

you could have it render to an image & just display the image when not being interacted with for optimal performance.
say 5 secs inactivity - render to static image.

once you've got that down, put a little inertia on the spin then switch to static render when the angular velocity reaches zero (i.e. not moving).

spec map so only the sea reflects the spec highlight.

works fast for me. (cv is very slow/jerky tho)

it's just a little unprofessional with those funny popping up things and the informal 'about me' speech. no issues with informality, only maybe a touch more formal than that, especially if your site is intended to woo or entice potential employment rather than a self indulgent web space.

i'm no webby myself, so cant even begin to crit your content (didnt mean much to me even looking at it), but i'd certainly fill out your cv a little more fully. a couple of issues left me in the dark if i were a potential employer looking at it -

1) who are you? where are you? how old are you?

2) your MS certifications are from 2003 yet you graduated in 2010? Also, your last work was in 2009, what did you do with your life in that 6-7 year gap?

3) what have been your working career achievements? why are you worth a hill of beans to me?

4) and as already mentioned, this is a show case to your life here. make it wow peeps. make them excited. you're a superb asset to a company, show that. it doesn't do that yet.
I'm currently in the final throws of re-working my site - i couldn't really give a stuff about the site mechanics, it's all very very basic, but my work is in cg visuals, so im making sure it's a feast for the eyes at least. Same for your cv - make it an employable banner for you.

the funny popping up things are innovative.

innovation demonstrates ability and pushes ui design forwards.

it's meant to communicate to us who are web savvy that he knows what he's doing.

if you're not, that site ain't for you. go get a free template :)

everything can be refined, but gotta start somewhere.

putting a face to some random bloke you met on the internet is nice.

a bit cheesy maybe but in a good way. it develops a working relationship.

your alternative 'about me' imagery would be ?

edit: for example to compare the two - I hit your site strat and sure there's a load of renders there that are awesome (that's what you do) but the site itself is nothing exciting. I don't think - wow this guy is doing some really cool things on the web. stephen needs to do some really cool things on the web to differentiate himself from the next guy.

wording in the section, not imagery.
