I'm new to max, and these forums. I've been modeling for a couple. I'm crossing over from using XSI. The interface is a bit different. I do game design, mostly. I'm working on a submachine gun. The pivot, move, scale is a lot different than XSI.

Basically, I want to move the selected face on the cylinder at a right angle twards the other base, not move it up or down. How does this work?

Hit MOVE and select LOCAL from the dropdown list of Reference Coordinate System.

Aye like del3d said... there are also edge/face/whatever constraints that can be found in sub-object modes which will allow you to do what you want here.

You're going to get VERY annoyed with the way 3ds Max is layed out, but stick with it! Eventually you'll be using all hotkeys and making your own too, then you'll see that it's really not that bad ;)

Also, you have to stick around... because us low poly artists are grossly out-numbered by arch-vis and "lardy dar fancy rendering" folk around here.

Oh, definitely check out our member tutorials here:

There's a lot to choose from, and a lot of them are mini video clips these days! (We love to use Jing around these parts)
