even the 40$ chinese tablets can do what you want.
My advice is go for looks and practicallity. Pick something the size and color you want, don't worry much about specs.
and go along the general rule: more $$$ == generally better(will last longer)

My advice would be - don`t get an Android unless you are paying good money for a more powerful handset or tablet. Android is IMO a nightmare on less powerful devices.. It will work but is basically shit. Don`t say i didn`t warn you :)

Windows for tablets and phones is however ( again IMO ) far better..

^ This is very true. On a powerful device, Android is wonderful. On a slow device with restricted memory, it's an unresponsive nightmare.

Go check out the Surface 3 from Microsoft. I have a Surface Pro (the first one) and it is fantastic. Great screen resolution, detachable keyboard, a stylus for drawing, Intel i5 CPU on it so that I can run any application; including 3ds Max! The Surface Pro 3 comes in different flavours; i3, i5 or i7, and it is both thinner and lighter then the ipad! (if that matters)

If you don't need so much power, you don't have to go for the Pro, then you get Windows RT that does not support regular applications but it does support Microsoft Office (for reading Word documents as you mentioned).

I also have a Windows Phone (Nokia Lumia 920) and it is fantastic!

I know everybody gives them shit, just because it is Microsoft products, but go to a store and try them out yourself. You might just like them :)
