New Car
show user profile  herfst1
Been a while since I modeled a car. Here's my WIP. Wonder if anyone can guess what model it is. Should be a piece of cake (naming the car, that is). I've got reference pics of the interior, underside and engine. I'm thinking of going all out and re-creating as much as I can.

This appears to be some Alfa Romeo. Did you look for the blueprints before starting using this tricky technique?

I've got both blueprints and photos. I'm mixing and matching between camera views and standard views, switching between blueprints (which actually aren't that accurate but show clear lines) and the refs.

And as far as it being an Alpha...

Mini update.

Had a hell of a time trying to just get that stupid boot to match refs. For some reason the side-photo didn't match the side-blueprint which didn't match the back photo which didn't match the back-blueprint which didn't match the perspective photo. Think it's now roughly right; maybe fix that slight bump on the middle of the bumper.

The best kind of photo for reference is really telephoto or as long as possible lens shots as the perspective distortion is so marginal at those distances.. ie comparing a side on photo somebodies taken with an 18mm isn`t going to match at all with the blueprint, whereas taken from 40 ft away with a telescopic would be a closer match.. Not easy to find shots like that though :) Apologies if i`m preaching to the converted!

@ Westcoast, yeah, I normally model "by the eye" but I really want to up my game and was trying to match it perfectly. Guess I'll just aim for "close as possible."

@ SD Nope, (semi) noob here. I realised there's an element of distortion with shorter lenses but I assumed getting the camera and photo angles right would eliminate any discrepencies. In the end I got it as close as I could then distorted the photo frame to match the model. Not the best solution but after 3 hours of back and forth I was frustrated... to put it mildly. Thanks for the clarification.
