My new job and what I've been up to etc...

Hey guys, now that I have a new account I'll be coming back and posting more. I wish I had access to my old account, I had so many usefull pages bookmarked. Is there any other way of retreiving that password ? I registered with an old hotmail account that I can't seem to get back into.

Anyway, as mentioned in my last post I came to London about 18 months ago to do a one week freelance job for a company, who then found me room above a pub just down the road, so I ended up staying and living in a pub for a year, which was a blast.

Last spring I had a phonecall from a producer in London who had seen my 'Overhead Railway' project on youtube, who then called me in to meet the director of this feature film that has been in production for sometime.

They showed me clips of a greenscreen shoot at Pinewood with some big name actors (who I can't mention). They offered me the job there and then to come in and take over the CGI work. They have a Nuke compositor in there now who really hasn't got much to do right now.

I started working on the film part time, then last October we shot a battle sequence in a Forest in North London for a week, I had to oversee all the bluescreen shots. Then last week we went to Morocco for 6 days. We saw some old sets (that are still available) which consisted mostly of sets from historical epics, Ridley Scott films etc... even the sets from the Elizabeth Taylor Cleopatra film are still in pretty good condition. We also saw some pretty amazing real locations, deserts, canyons, oasis, small villages etc...

Since last spring I've been building a 3D model of The Lighthouse of Alexandria, just one day a week, but I have a lot more work to do.

The film, which has to be kept quiet for now is the story of a character from history that has suprisingly not been put on to film yet. It deals with a number of world religions, so there is already a market for this film, and the fact that I will be getting a percentage of the films profits is just the icing on the cake.

I can't say who's in it, but a lot of scenes have already been shot with the following actors.

The guy who was in Lord of the Rings and X Men.

The guy who was in Lawrence of Arabia.

The guy who was the Birdman in Flash Gordon and a CGI character in The Phantom Menace.

The guy who was in Barry Lyndon and Clockwork Orange.

The guy who was in The Hunt for Red October and Lethal Weapon 2.

There are some more but I can't think what they've been in.

I'm pretty excited about the job, and I also like the responsibility of being a Technical Director on a film with a strong cast. I'm not aware of any independant film in the UK that has this much ambition. The plan is to make it look as epic as possible.

At some point we are probably going to need to bring in some more 3D guys, so I'll let you know when that happens.

I start week after next full time.

You better do a f***ing good job then mate British film industry in the balance here! :)

How does your role work are you responsible for overseeing the cgi-related shoots as well as directing cgi team members ( ie modellers / fx / compositors etc )?

"the fact that I will be getting a percentage of the films profits is just the icing on the cake."

Well that's either really good, or really bad.

Either way, sounds like some cool work, so nice one!

I'm a student (of architecture) in London. I can't really sell myself on much 3D work, I can do the basics, but I would LOVE to come over and see what you're up to. If you ever get a quiet afternoon where you might be able to show me a bit of the process involved in professional CGI I would jump at the chance.

I hope you are counting on getting $0 of the profit. There is not a single chance in the world of getting more than that.

Look up Hollywood accounting on Wikipedia for more info.

Guys I'm getting paid a weekly salary, the small percentage is on top of this. Also, this is film has nothing to do with Hollywood, all the accounts / contracts are being dealt with internally. I've worked on indy films before and those who chose to take a percentage have done ok out of it. On one of those occasions I took the salary option, and got screwed.

Farks, when we are up and running and have some stuff to show I'll see what I can do about you getting them in there. The director really wants to keep this film quiet, there is a website for the investors, built to show them our work in progress, but it's password protected.

There are things I'm not even allowed to discuss with other members of the crew.

Congrats. NDA's suck indeed, just think though that once it goes public knowledge you can totally bask in it's warm limelight.
