Hi
I know I posted ashort animation here a couple of weeks back but I thought Id post my official first work on here as its (as far as Im concerened) finished.
This has been on the go since I bought max and after effects at the end of June.
Its not up to your standards, but like I say this is my first work and theres so much basic stuff I still dont know.

haaaaa!
Don't think I'd seen that since I was a kid!

Good job man!
Stuck with it, which is the hardest part.

The fact that it is complete, with sfx and everything else makes it quite enjoyable to watch!

Good job...and keep at it!

Thanks for that, was expecting it to be ripped apart.
It can be improved but I don't know how.

"It can be improved but I don't know how."

By moving on to something else.

This was your first... it's done, you should have learnt things along the way, which you would apply to your future projects. If you learnt nothing... and aren't sure what could have been improved upon... then you've got quite a large problem!

No, I've learnt loads, but there are things like:
the bones in his face would move independently of his face, so his head had to stay perfectly still at all times)
I never used or made any specularity, bump, normal or displacement map (I only learnt about displacement maps during the last 3 scenes, by then it was too late)
And I don't know if any of this stuff would make things better, and still don't know the differences between them, or how to make them. its better than my original poser version though (still up there)

"And I don't know if any of this stuff would make things better"

That's a very normal thing to not know! It's not something that can be easily taught either... I mean, if you understand what things do, but aren't sure of whether or not their use would actually be of any use... then that's what experimenting is all about. It's why you have to just keep at it. It would be difficult (I think) for someone to come along and say "Use normal maps for this, and displacement for that, and specular here, and ambient occlusion there"... because different situations call for different approaches.

There's only so much you can read (or watch) to gain knowledge... it's all theoretical until you actually apply it. The best thing any beginner can do, is to just set goals, and then attempt to achieve them! Put the technicalities aside, those will come in time. Think of something you want to do next... get all your reference together... and then hammer at it.

Sure thanks,
I will make a few observations about this video to base what i need to learn next though.

For one, do you know why the bones in his eye lids had a different orbit to the rest of his head?, I think someone posted a link here to a tutorial based around a button I couldn't find, but it seemed to mention the problem.
Also....
The surgeons gowns and gloves looked weird and nothing I did changed that, like they were rotoscoped as cartoons, the shadows were really harsh.
