Multiple Instances of Cat rig on stage

I'm making some character animations for a fighting game, and i've approached grab-type moves, which require animations to be made of the character [i]being[/i] grabbed as well in an accurate way. I want to make a copy instance of my current CAT rig and flip it so I can use it as a reference.

It's apparent I can just select and and shift + drag...what is the best way to accomplish this, or what would you say is the best workaround for it. I appreciate any help.

in my experience cat rigs are fun untill you want to do complex things and basic copying of data from one rig to another, could be me but i stranded on many occasions, my next rig will probably be a biped or a custom made rig..

If you just want to use it as a reference, select all the mesh types of the rig (no need for helper objects/splines) and go to Tools > Snapshot and hit Okay/Submit/Whatever.

Now you'll have two rigs in the exact same place, except one of them isn't a rig. Just a mesh.

I think... (don't quote me on this), if you make a new (blank) layer in the layer manager and set it to the active layer (ie, new objects are created in it) and then do the snapshot, it should place the snapshot'ed meshes into that layer, for easier access.

Man I was so happy when they implemented CAT... now after working with it, I am not. So many crashes... there were buttons I was not allowed to touch or insta-crash...

never get low & slow & out of ideas

br0t, what version of Max are you running? I'll admit that I get annoyed with CAT quite a lot... but I can't deny its speed in comparison to building custom rigs. I've had the odd crash here and there, but nothing like what you're describing. Can you go into more details?

Hey Dave, I dont wanna drag CAT all down, maybe it was just my system, I was using Max 2011 at that time and quite a number of plugins. Maybe some combination of that caused a lot of problems when working with CAT. For example the CAT Motion Editor was mostly useless, there is a known bug that when you have set up a Walk with it and want to edit it, the Editor Button will crash your Max in 9/10 cases.("The paw of death") And that bug has been known for years. Nice implementation! In general Max crashed often when working with CAT, sometimes I just touched a bone and Boom!

I also had some very very nasty problems, like saving & loading time increasing to about 10 minutes even for very simple scenes. I only had this problem in scenes I used a CAT rig, so I suspect it to be at least partly responsible.

I like CAT, and you can do great stuff with it, and it eases rigging a lot. I used a base human rig and attached custom systems for the hand/fingers and the face animation. That worked nicely, except all the crashes. Havent worked with it since, so maybe its better in 2012
