Multiple Buckets - Down from 8 to 4 on same day.

Afternoon chaps. VERY long time no see.

I have an upgraded PC at work to do some Max rendering. I know very little about hardware but its pretty decent compared to my old one.

The old PC showed 4 buckets when rendering but the first initial test I did on my new PC showed 8 buckets this morning shortly after starting the PC for the first time. Now however it is only showing 4.

Whats up with that? As far as I know I haven't changed anything.

Intel Xeon W-2125 CPU @ 4.00GHz
16GB DDR4
Windows 7 64bit

Is there some setting that can be changed?

Very long time indeed :O

You can check which cores are being used by Max by opening the task manager, right clicking Max's .exe file and clicking "Set affinity" or something. If all cores are checked then there should be as many buckets.

That CPU has only got 4 cores. It sounds like hyper-threading could turned off?

This affinity thingy will actually list hyper threading cores as two cores, so if there are 8 cores and they're all checked, I'd say it'd have to be Max messing up.

Well it says I have 4 cores which confuses me because I 100% saw 8 buckets on my first test render which was done purely to see how many buckets were going to be used on rendering! And I was pleasantly surprised.

This confuses me.

Ah well thanks for the help.

I came in to work today opened that BIOS thingymajig and turned on hyper threading (it was off) and lo and behold I now have 8 buckets again! result. I will test with and without to see if there's an improvement as reports saying there's not much difference and sometimes it can make max less stable.

Time will tell.

Cheers guys muchos appreciated!
